On Hughes' side, it was because he had duties to his country that he couldn't leave the Winding Way. Fond as he had become of the crew members, a job was still a job, and normally it wouldn't be enough to keep him away from his family.

"Excuse me?" Hughes blinked, totally not understanding what Gintoki just said. "Whew, we have one happy?"

"Whew, we have one... body? What does that even mean?" he laughed, the situation just a tiiiiny bit ridiculous. The question, however, sent him back to being somber.

"Hm. How do I answer that? I've always been friends with everyone back there, and I'd trust them with my life on the field, yanno? But they'd be too busy to take care after mine when it comes down to it." Soldiers weren't too reliable in a crisis, sadly, and the one person he trusted to take care of his family for him was on the Victoria, on some plot or another.

"It's not really... sad," he replied uncomfortably. He liked to think good of people, he really did, but he was also a realistic man with realistic expectations. "How do I put it... I can rely on them most of the time, but they also have things to take care of so I know they wouldn't be able to commit to something like that."

As for going back to Bellcius: "Nah, I can't abandon the ship. We have too few officers as it is! My family's not in any immediate danger." Not the mention that the whole of Ivona's military was gathering there at the moment. He knew that there was nothing to worry about, but he was a worrying man.

Hughes started at him for a few seconds before grinning like an idiot. Of course, Gintoki was right. It was his choice to stay, so he better do a good job while he was there.

"Yeah," he chuckled. "Yeah. Thanks, man." And then he raised a fist for a fistbump, like he used to in the army.

What the hell, did this idiot not know what it meant... "No, no," he laughed instead, bumping his fist to Gintoki's gently but firmly. "A fistbump! A sign of comrade-ness-ish things!"

"No, no!" Hughes was starting to become frantic of this particularly weird interpretation of the sacred fistbump. "You bump fists together as a sign of brothership or comradeship or you know, just being friends!"

Hughes thought about it for all of two seconds before he grinned and nodded. "Yeah! Brofist, man!"

"Brofist, man!" he repeated insistently, unshakable in his new-found good cheer.
