"...!"

From outside the room, Hughes would have been able to hear the sound of papers fluttering about, followed by a loud thump. It hadn't occurred to Lucas that someone would come visit him. Usually, he sat in the records room alone, going over the notes he'd made throughout the day. And once he started, he became very engrossed in his work. It was because he didn't want to make a mistake.

After a few moments, the door opened. Lucas stood there, a little dazed, eyes slightly bloodshot. He'd been crying. "M-Mister Hughes!" he gasped, still amazed that someone had come to see him. He figured people would mostly be busy because of everything that had happened. "Did you need something?"

Hughes just blinked at the noise in the room and waited patiently. He hoped he wasn't disturbing the boy too much, but he just wanted to bring a present and some sweets over. Hughes was just thinking about what he would say if Lucas didn't appreciate the gift after all when the boy came out with his puffy eyes and cheeks. He'd been crying?

"Lucas!" he exclaimed, alarmed. "Why're you crying?" Without waiting for an answer, he ushered Lucas back in and shut the door behind them. The package he had was placed quickly on the desk. "Are you all right? Did you get in a fight? You're not hurt, are you?"

"N-no!" stammered Lucas as he was pushed into the room. He always cried. Over a lot of things. "I... I was just upset about the bombings." Lucas was so embarrassed, and he kept his gaze off Hughes. But that was how he noticed the present. Well, it looked like a present, wrapped up all nice with a bow. "Nothing to worry about, sir."

"Are you sure?" he asked in his kindest tone, peering down at the kid's face. He was well aware that Lucas was already technically legal, but he had a boy's face and Hughes had always been fond of kids. "The bombing is upsetting."
