"Kambei! You're just in time!" Now Gorobei was running towards his friend, the bag on his back flapping around, but not spilling anything. "You're in for a treat."
Once he caught up to Kambei, he immediately asked, "What's your favorite color?"

“My favorite color?” Kambei raised his eyebrow at Gorobei’s question. “Why do you ask?”

"It's a surprise, Kambei." Gorobei smiled and chuckled lightheartedly. "I promise it's nothing that will be physically taxing."
As he is accustomed to doing, Gorobei threw an arm around Kambei's shoulder and tried to pull the other man along. "Let's get going. We've got to get you some supplies."

Kambei didn’t like the sound of that at all. He was one-hundred and twenty percent sure that this supposed ‘surprise’ that Gorobei has for him is all apart of some intricate ruse. How could it not be considering that his fellow samurai has such a fondness for jokes? Kambei knew it was wrong of him to think of Gorobei’s jovial nature as something slightly wicked and impish, but there is some truth to that logic.
“Supplies?” He asked as he glanced at the all too happy Katayama with a vaguely exasperated stare. Just what is this man planning? “Supplies for what? Gorobei, I do not think we need anymore supplies for the ship.”

They didn't have to go far before Gorobei found the store he was looking for. Gorobei went inside and ordered a yard of red fabric. "If I remember correctly, you like red, yeah?" He winked exaggeratedly at Kambei, but it was just a tease and nothing for Kambei to worry about. There was nowhere near enough fabric there to create any kind of clothing.
"We'll go to the hill outside one of the shipyards where I used to work. The conditions there should be perfect."
