VASH'S GROUP - HEADING NORTHEAST stampeded October 9 2008, 06:30:45 UTC
Vash stepped off the gangplank, took one deep breath of the humid air, and sneezed.

The jungle loomed ahead of them, and loudly, at that - even from this distance, it wasn't silent. There were the sounds of strange bird calls, and of the bugs dancing between the trees. It was the most foliage Vash had ever seen in his life, but even so, he couldn't bring himself to quite appreciate it. He'd heard a few things about Kagatau in his time that not only made him pause, but made him want to turn right back around and steer the ship back to Vohemar.

It was too late to do that now. Rubbing his nose, he turned to his group with a smile, "Okay! Are we all ready to go?"

Shido was in an uncharacteristically good mood. If there was one thing he'd missed while in the Limitless Fortress, one thing he'd longed for every time he had to set foot on another airship, it was wilderness. Forests teeming with life, with the sound of animals hidden in the foliage made him feel at home in a way that human civilisations never could. Even the oppressive heat didn't bother him.

This was definitely more interesting than a little country fair.

"All set," he told Vash.

Swinging her shuriken over her shoulder, Yuffie threw Vash a reckless grin and a shake of the head.

"Ready? I was born ready, spikey."

Yuffie wasn't exactly one to get all cozy with nature and the humid weather was something that was pretty much icking her out. But the idea of finding treasure or valuables of any sort (because really, what kind of jungle didn't have some kind of gold? Or even better, mana crystals?) was enough to get her off the ship and into the wild.

Maybe she'd get lucky and find a way to sneak away from the group. There was no good in being held down by the bunch of them anyways, and the bird boy would probably get in the way somehow.

Hana was...somewhat less than ready. He still didn't want to go into the jungle--and he wasn't even in Haruhi's group! He was only here because of Haruhi, what was the point int hat if they weren't even in the same group--and he didn't think he'd ever get used to this humidity. They'd hardly left the ship, and already he was sweating up a storm.

He had managed to find his father's sword from where it had been hiding in his mess of a room; not that it would do him much good. He had almsot no idea how to use it. But still, it made him feel at least a little better about wading into the terrifying jungle.

Wordlessly, Hana nodded, trying to swallow his fear.

From the moment they landed, Ariel was excited. That excitement had not left her now that she was standing outside before this great jungle. Her heart was pounding at the thought of stepping into this jungle and searching all over for treasure...it was going to be far more fun than her treasure hunts in the Lake! She couldn't wait to start!

"Ready, Mr. Vash!" she responded energetically.

"Great! I'm glad to see you're all so eager!" Well, except for Hana, but that wasn't a surprise at all. "Now, I want everyone to stay alert, and stay together. I've got two hunting knives on me if anyone needs a weapon," and he added after glancing at Ariel, "if you know how to use one."

With that, he turned, motioning for them to follow him as he walked to the treeline. "We're going northeast from the ship's position, for anyone that wants to follow their maps." Vash had his stuck in his gunbelt, and wasn't intending on looking too closely at it himself. As long as he kept his sense of direction, everything would be fine. Hopefully.

Vash brushed aside some rather large leaves as he led the way, stepping carefully. Not only was it darker under the thick canopy, the ground was strewn with all sorts of tree roots and plant matter.

[OOC: As has been mentioned elsewhere, everyone has been given a copy of the map, but it has far less information - just an outline of the island, and the Way's position is marked. The rest is one big ( ... )

Shido made a dismissive sound at Vash's offer of a weapon, and he didn't spare a thought for his copy of the map either. Lines drawn on paper had no bearing whatsoever on the immediacy of the jungle around them. He could always follow the trail of their scent back to the ship, so it wasn't like he could get lost.

He fell into step behind Vash, eyeing the man's bright red coat a bit doubtfully. It stuck out like an eyesore in the jungle, but on the other hand, in the animal kingdom, vibrant colours were usually a sign of danger. He hadn't decided if this was true about Vash.

"So what are we looking for, anyway?" he asked. He wasn't really interested in the prize, so he hadn't paid attention, but if they were supposed to be bringing it back he supposed he should know what to look for.

Stepping ahead of Hanatarou and Ariel, she turned around and spoke to the two, already marking them as the weakest members. They looked like the type to get eaten up in a heartbeat by huge monsters or fall down ditches.

"You know kid, you couldn't look more scared if you tried."

Slipping the map in her back pocket, she disregarded it completely. Not only would it be useless, but the chances of it being accurate were also pretty questionable. There wasn't anything better than a ninja's sense of direction anyways, to hell if she'd take instructions from a lousy piece of paper.

Pushing her way through thick greenery, she stared up ahead and zoomed in on anything that looked remotely shiny. Or twinkled in the sun. Anything of value, really, because as interesting as it was on the Winding Way, sometimes she wondered if it was really helping her raise money for Solare.

There wasn't much Hana could say to refute Yuffie's words. He was terrified, and he'd never been any good at hiding his feelings. He followed mutely behind the others, watching the ground to avoid tripping.

Unlike the others who were disregarding their maps, Ariel had already gotten it out to have another look. A real treasure map was well...impressive to her, and she wanted to make sure she had it memorized. She just hoped they could all keep their copies afterwards. This would make a nice addition to her collection of human things.

As she walked behind near the back of the group she heard what Yuffie said to Hana. Putting the map down for a moment she gave the boy a pat on the back that was meant to be encouraging.

"Don't worry! It's only as scary as you make it out to be. We're with a good group, so if things get dangerous they can handle it." she smiled.

"We're looking for any clues we can find about where Avon lived," Vash said to Shido as they picked their way through the jungle. "Even if it's an old campsite, it might provide a valuable clue!" He only hoped that Avon hadn't saw fit to bury the play somewhere. It seemed like a strange thing to do, but from what he'd heard, Avon was occasionally a little nutty ( ... )

Shido swore under his breath, having been taken by surprise despite the need to stay focused. He'd been too caught up in examining the strange decorations on the poles, wondering what their purpose was. Very faintly, he recalled that his own clan had kept similar totems, but these ones just made him feel uneasy.

The word 'trap' had an immediate effect, bringing to mind that horrible, caged animal feeling. Shido didn't even think before he reacted. The closest attacker had levelled their spear at him threateningly, but Shido dodged past the sharpened point and moved into a range where the long weapon wouldn't be effective, savagely smashing his elbow into the man's face.

Of course the move brought him out of position of the rest of the group. Ninja girl, he knew, could take care of herself, and Vash probably could, but the red haired girl and the dark haired boy were unknowns. As soon as his attacker was down he hastily glanced back to see how they were faring.

The moment Vash opened his loud mouth and shouted the warning, Yuffie was on her feet, flinging her shuriken once in a complete arc at the group of approaching men--or really, whoever the hell they were.

She flicked a small knife at the foot of a man with a pole in his hand, aiming at his feet and narrowing her eyes as he doubled over in pain. It was all action and not a waste of a moment as she took a step back and jumped to catch her shuriken again, turning her head just in time to shout over at both Hanatarou and Ariel.

"Hey, don't just stand there! Do something already!"

Yuffie didn't really care if they ran away, weaklings had no place here to begin with. But still, she'd be annoyed if anyone got injured because of the pack of freaks in front of them.

Hana panicked when the natives burt out of nowhere and started attacking them. He fumbled for his sword figuring it would be better than nothing, but when he pulled it out of the sheath he lost his grip on it and it went falling away from him, into the underbrush.

He fell down to his hands and knees, scrambling for his only weapon. After a moment's hunting he found it, thankfully avoiding cutting himself on the blade. He grabbed it and then stood back up, trying to look brave but in reality shaking so hard that the tip of the blade was moving back a full inch.

Ariel wasn't a fighter. She liked adventure sure, but any time she ran into danger back home she well...out swam it. If it was one thing she missed about being underwater it was how easy it was to out swim a pursuing predator.

But she wasn't a good runner. And maneuvering around a lake she knew like the back of her hand was much easier than running blindly through a dangerous jungle. The only real option was to hide and let everyone else handle it.

At the moment though, she'd have to avoid the spear coming straight for her.

Quickly she headed towards a tree. Moving behind it at the right moment, the spear missed her and dove into the trunk getting stuck. As the native tried to pull it out, she dived into the foliage and attempted hiding as everyone focused on fighting. At least she wouldn't be in their way, hopefully.

It had been laughably easy for Ocelot to follow the small group that had departed from the Winding Way; of course, it was rather difficult not to notice a tall man with his hair spiked straight up and wearing a bright red coat trapsing around a forest. Then, the group walked straight into a clearing, which clearly violated all common sense. Oh well. That made things much easier.

He'd spent the last minute or so watching things play out and relishing the feeling of loading his revolver-he'd only need five shots for this job, and purposefully left the last chamber open. He spun the chamber, stopped it, took aim at the first attacker, and fired. There really wasn't much room to be flashy, so he simply moved on to the next four, each bullet hitting its mark.

He smirked, blew the smoke from the barrel of the gun, and stepped into the clearing, spinning it in a fairly relaxed manner.

"You know, it's not a good idea to walk into a clearing in the middle of a jungle. Something like that could happen."
