Characters: Cid Highwind and Trowa Barton Content: Cid calls out his new co-worker to see what he has to work with Setting: Silvana engine room Time: Early Evening Warnings: Cid's mouth when faced with a stotic
Immediately upon getting the message, mostly likely from other mechanic, Trowa wasted only enough time to reply back to him then headed straight away to the engine room. He had already been exploring so he knew exactly where it was.
He stepped in the engine room. He was familiar with the equipment just on a smaller scale than this. Though from what he had seen when he had been walking through the engine room, it didn't look like anything he'd have a problem with.
Easily he spotted the other mechanic, partially because he was the only other person in the room. He immediately walked over. "Trowa Barton reporting," he said.
Cid smirked, taking a drag off his cigerette and lazily blowing smoke off to one side.
"Well... arn't you just sharp there soldier boy." He chuckled, though he was secretly pleased. He didn't really outrank the other mechanic, but he was used to such snappy replies from his crew back home.
"Fucking relax. I just want to go over somethings with you. He turned back to the engine, tapping some ash in a bucket he had brought down as a machshift ashtray.
"Tell me kid, what do ya think of the ship so far?"
Trowa watched him as he blew the smoke off to the side. He had no problems with cigarettes, which was good considering he had the feeling he would probably be seeing a lot of the other mechanic's cigarettes.
Honestly, he had thought he was relaxed, but he was one to argument about such petty symantics so he simply nodded.
"It's impressive," Trowa remarked, looking over at the engine. "Bigger than the ones I've worked on before, but when I was looking through here before it didn't look like it would be too difficult."
"What kind of ships have you worked on before?" He asked, not hesitating for useless small talk. He had a goal, and he planned on reaching it as soon as possible. He would worry about getting to know the other mechanic as a person after work business was done.
"I've worked on the vehicles that the mercenaries use in Colvus," Trowa remarked. "I also work on some civilian vehicles while I was in that area." So probably not ships persay, but Trowa kept that to himself.
"Hn. Not specialized in ships? Alright. I can work with that. Least you're honest." He spun on his heels, offering his hand to the yonger man. Last test before he let Trowa off the hook and got down to the fun part of their shared job.
Trowa wasn't much for shaking hands, but oh well, he'd have to get used to it. Keeping on his guard partially because he still hadn't shaken that need to remain constantly alert, he extended his own hand to shake the other mechanic's outstretched hand.
"Hm. Nice handshake. Good. Now we can get to the real work!" He clapped his gloved hands together and headed back towards the engine. Stashed nearby was a stack of rolled up papers. He brought them back and held them out for the other man.
"These are copies of the layout plans for the ships steam pipes and vents. I went through and sketched them out, though I doubt they're complete. She's a complicated bird. Take em, learn em. This ship is the most complicated peice of technology I've ever seen, and if something goes wrong it'll go wrong in a BIG way. There's only the two of us keeping her afloat. Ya understand?"
Trowa took the rolls of paper from Cid and unrolled one of them to glance at the plans as Cid spoke. It was definitely complicated, but all that meant is that it would take some time to get everything sorted out.
Also looking at the plans, he got a better idea of what Cid meant by "if something goes wrong it'll go wrong in a BIG way." It was certainly the most complicated technology he had worked on.
"I understand," Trowa told him. "I see what you mean. We need to be on top of everything to keep it up."
"Yep. And I'm sure there's plenty more going on here then we'll be able to figure out in a month, let alone the few days it took to draw out that. This baby's a prototype, and the last mechanics didn't leave anything to go by. Better to figure it out on your own though. Makes it more real." He walked back over to the engine, patting it like one would a horse. His gloves were nice and thick, so the heat didn't bother him.
"Get to know her Trowa, and she'll tell ya what's wrong before it causes bigger issues. That's what being a mechanic's about. Not just putting her back together after the fact.
Trowa nodded. It was a shame that the plans hadn't been left for them. "I'll explore some more and look at this for myself. Hopefully in the time we have before we leave port, we'll have a better chance of getting to figure everything out before its working to keep us up." Good to know it when it was working as hard as it could, but also good to know when it wasn't. He also made the mental note to pull his gloves out his bag before he came down here again.
Cid chuckled. "Good man. I'll let ya get to it. I've got a date with some kitchen staff and some boiling water." He strolled past Trowa and towards the door. "Keep me updated if you find anything, got it?"
