In Verona: Chapter 10

Sep 18, 2012 17:05

As with most things in Verona, mourning was a matter of status. Wealthy families mourned for as long as six months. During mourning, earthly concerns such as politics and money were considered untouchable. If a member of the family broke the aura of mourning, it was considered finished. A return to worldly concerns was regarded as the signal that the family's grief had passed. For most families, this meant a rather quick period of bereavement, as their merchants and farmers were not often able to wait for payments. Shops, fields, and children could not survive on tradition.
