Friday Five: Connections!

1.) Nowadays, just about everyone knows a couple who first met online. Among couples you know, who has the best story?
I'd say Christopher and Nikkol. They met online and began to intertwine their lives together through the phone and internet and through the mail. She lived in South Dakota, he lived in Ontario. So there they were, separated by a country. Their story culminated with Nikkol going to Canada to stay with him, and they married and she became a Permanent Resident.

My mother in law and her boyfriend also met online, though fortunately they're both Canadian so there's no worry about forced separation and the immigration process. They've been together in person for nearly a year now.

I'll also share our personal story. We first met online in 2002, drifting in and out of each other's lives for the next two years until we renewed our friendship just after both of us were coming out of devastating, abusive relationships. We were over 800 miles apart, with me in Virginia and he in Ontario. We decided to try a long-distance relationship in 2004, and amazingly this lasted until 2007, when I got tired of it all and broke up with him. We got back together a month later, with much hesitation on my part, but then we finally met in 2008 and I came to Canada to stay with him. We ended up marrying in early 2009 and I became a Permanent Resident two months ago today :)

2.) Who among your real-life acquaintances might you never have been friends with if you hadn't gotten to know each other online first?
Definitely catchtheball! We first met on the rather dead LJ comm Canadian Friends (I think) and got to know each other. She's pretty much my soul twin. We were born on the same day in 1984, we're the same height, can't drive, were homeschooled, and there's so many other little likenesses that it's scary.

3.) If people you know online only, who would you most like to meet in real life?
Lily (phoenicis), whom I have known for ten years.

Jessie (lifesnotasong), whom I have also known for ten years and knew (and possibly still knows, I'm not sure) Lily in RL!

Catherine (dreamstrifer, who is one of my best friends! We met on a dolling forum in late 2002 or early 2003.

Jonno, whom I've known since early 2003, I believe. He's one of my best friends as well and lives in England.

Mandi, whom I've known since early 2005. We met on an MLP forum when we were both at our collecting peak. We seem to have grown apart over time, which makes me sad, but I still consider her to be part of my Triangle of Besties.

Noelle and Suzanne (wings_unfurling and soulpaintedstar), who are very close in RL. I consider them both to be my heart sisters.

Kira (blood_noir, whom I met through Noelle and Suzanne. She is another of my heart sisters!

Shana and Rebekah, both of whom I met at DSP. We, especially Shana and I, quickly grew close. Fortunately, Rebekah's probably coming to visit me in April, and Shana lives in upstate New York!

4.) In the past 365 days, what's the longest you've gone without connecting in any way to the Internet, including email?
LOL. Um. This is pretty embarrassing to admit, but I think from December 18th-19th was the longest. They were a very busy two days because I was doing last-minute packing, making food for the family Christmas get-together, shopping, attending the get-together, flying to Dulles, missing my connecting flight and spending the night at the airport, flying to Toronto, landing as a resident, and reuniting with Trevor.

5.) Who is the least-connected person you know in real life?
Hmm. Probably Trevor's grandparents, and Trev's and my friend Alora.

trev, friends
