We went to Puerto Rico last week/end...
We arrive Saturday afternoon at the tiny Ponce airport and headed to k's dad's house.
It is pretty small and he shares it with a bunch of other folk, but it is right on the water. We met his friend/neighbor/landlord Jorge. He, his wife Aneda and Charlie slaughtered us some coconuts.
Then we went to Fran's house and then to a hotel to see a dance show.
It was interesting and the food and drinks were tasty.
Sunday we visited La Guancha and looked at hungry fish and walked along the beach. We then met up with Fran again and had dinner at Charlie's favorite restaurant,
Yeyo's, which is right next to his house. It was pretty good. We then went back to La Guancha and walk around more listening to music and drinking drinks.
Monday we decided to drive up to some caverns at Laras. Charlie wanted to take the scenic route so we took off into the mountains. We saw lots of banana trees and coffee plants.
The red beans are ripe apparently. Then they need to be dried and roasted. We found a coffee plant that looked unowned and poached a few. Later, we found a downed banana tree and grabbed a bunch of the bananas from the road. They were just going to get squashed anyway... Charlie fried them up for breakfast the next day and they were tasty. The drive ended up taking much longer than we expected and we got to the caverns to find that they closed at 3PM. Then we decided to head to the
observatory at Arecibo, but it was closed on Monday and Tuesday. Slackers... We then headed up to the city of Arecibo, but couldn't find any thing to do or eat, so we headed back on the much easier highway. We had dinner at an OK Chinese buffet and then went home and crashed. Also, at some point during the trip we picked up some quenepas.
They are fruit. You split the case with your finger nail and then try to suck the flesh off the core.
They aren't much food for the effort, but they are OK.
Tuesday we went to the beach at Playa Santa. It was very clean and mostly deserted. We only stayed for maybe an hour because there were ominous clouds heading our way. We picked up some tasty food at a roadside stand and then headed to the dry forest and ate on the side of the road. It was interesting to see cacti in Puerto Rico.
We drove around a bit and then headed back as it started to rain. The rain became a monsoon, but it ended pretty quickly... We met up with fran again and headed to La Parguera to see a bioluminescent bay tour. We were had dinner there as well, they served sangria and white wine in plastic cups with ice... We were convinced to take the glass bottom boat against the advice of others and were disappointed. The boat was really to high off the water to enjoy the dynoflagellates.
Wednesday we went to the DonQ Rum distillery. We didn't actually do the tour, we just bought lots of rum in there store.
We had lunch at Yeyo's again. We couldn't resist getting more tasty mofongo.
Mofongo is ground plantains, usually with some other stuff hidden at the center. It is often served in a Pilon. After that, we ran to the airport. It was still tiny... Three whole gates...
Otherwise, my car's new tires finally arrove[sic] and are installed, so i'm no longer worried about them exploding. k's birthday was this weekend and we had lots of delicious/sinful food items. Yes...
Sleep!
