Character Name: Gwaine Series: BBC’s Merlin Timeline: Post “The Eye of the Phoenix” (Episode 8, Season 3) Canon Resource Links: Gwaine @ the Merlin Wiki
Affiliation: Trainer
Personality: Gwaine embodies the word “strength”-in tandem with Merlin’s “magic” and Arthur’s “courage”-which not only means physical strength but also strength of character. At first, he doesn’t seem this way; in fact, when Merlin and Arthur first come upon him, it’s clear that he’s more at home in a tavern than under a knight’s banner. However, as Gwaine slowly reveals himself, it becomes clear that beneath his rough, casual, and charlatan exterior, he is loyal, resourceful, and a man of great honor.
A man who enjoys the pleasurable things in life, Gwaine isn’t afraid to make this known. He can drink through an entire night, but never misses the opportunity to order drinks for others, as well (regardless of whether he has the money to pay for said drinks). He’s an incurable flirt and constantly has a loose, lazy smile on his lips, just as ready to make a cutting remark as he is to say something endearing. There would be nothing wrong with his philandering if he took responsibility for it, but he seldom does. He often acts without thinking, getting involved in brawls and arguments without judging how they’ll turn out. There is something inherently likeable about Gwaine, however-it is as though his carefree attitude is infectious.

However, like most, there is more to Gwaine that is first apparent. He isn’t hiding any deep, dark secrets-he’s much too straightforward for that-but he does often perceive more than he lets on. Perhaps one of the most important things about Gwaine’s personality is his view of those in power. He has little respect for or trust in kings and knights, largely because they abandoned his mother after his father’s death. Because of this, he regards royalty as “certainly not worth dying for”. The only royal who ever challenges this notion is Prince Arthur, who impresses Gwaine with his loyalty, justness, and sense of honor.
Gwaine has a keen sense of honor and chivalry that doesn’t often match up with the world he lives in. He is trusting and open, and likes standing up for those in need. He readily makes friends with Merlin, and doesn’t seem to be tied down by titles or duty. (Though his father was a knight, he has no problem claiming a servant as his best friend, and never reveals his own status to those around him.) Gwaine is also a nomad, constantly wandering from place to place and never putting down roots. When Merlin questions him about this, he claims that people get sick of him too quickly. However, it’s more likely that he simply has never found a place he truly belongs in, or people he truly believes in. Arthur and Merlin, however, ultimately change this fact.
On the surface, Gwaine is lazy, flirtatious, roughly charming and fiercely opinionated. He has no trouble getting in fights or helping those he believes needs it. His behaviors are, in fact, rooted in his deep sense of honor and morality, which isn’t always apparent. Ultimately, he’s a stubborn but well-intentioned man who’s just looking for his calling.
Strengths/Weaknesses: + An incredibly skilled fighter, Gwaine is as handy with his bare hands as he is with a sword. His signature move is using his own blade to wrestle his opponent’s away from them. + Easy-going and open, Gwaine is good at endearing himself to people. The only reason he doesn’t have many constant friends is because he moves around so often. + A man of honor and morality, Gwaine is more upright than he seems. He’s a fair judge of character and hates seeing the strong preying on the weak. - Gwaine is stubborn to a fault. If he’s made a decision, he refuses to go back on it, no matter what the circumstances. - Though his easy-going nature is a good thing, Gwaine can often not be serious enough when a situation calls for it. Connected to this is the fact that he has no sense of responsibility. - Gwaine is a wander, and can’t be pinned down. This ultimately distances him from people and leaves him quite vulnerable.

Pokemon Starter: A female Eevee name Isabella. (I think I did the counting right on how many spots are left, but if not he’ll get a male Magby.)
Password: Deviled Eggs!
Samples (Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)
First Person Sample:Ah, I think I’m getting the hang of this…a bit. It’s a magic box, right? Some of the others were using them to talk to people. I’m not much one for sorcery, but if it’ll help me out in this place…
Ah, I’m being rude. Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Gwaine, and I don’t think even I can get drunk enough to imagine all this. Though it’s a bit strange, yeah, having some woman pretend to be my sweet, departed mother.
I was travelling with two blokes-Merlin and Arthur, they’re called-until just a while ago, so maybe they’re around here, somewhere. If anyone’s seen them, I’d appreciate being told. ‘Till then, guess I’ll just be moving on. Well, me and Isabella, here, that is.
Third Person Sample: Gwaine had never been able to resist tests of strength. Ever since he was a boy, he’d been getting caught up in various spats and brawls, wrestling with village boys and betting on his own strength. And, for the most part, his strength didn’t let him down. So though he still found Johto more than a little strange, and he’d rather be finding a way home, he couldn’t pretend that the idea of the Gym Challenge didn’t peak his interest, just a bit.
He had made it to Violet City only a few days ago, and had spent much of that time looking around. It certainly was very different, but not in such a bad way. The accommodations were good, the other travellers friendly. And there were certainly a lot of charming young ladies to spend his time with. All in all, it was very quaint. It just wasn’t home.
“…stupid to think about,” he muttered under his breath as he walked out of the Mart, hands in his pockets. “As if I’ve been home in years, anyhow.” And that was true enough. Travelling around Johto was no different that travelling in Albion-the only difference was that he’d yet to acquire a horse. That, and…
“Vee!” Isabella fairly purred, leaping up on his shoulder. She was getting bigger, but could still snuggle their comfortably enough. Despite himself, Gwaine smiled and patted her affectionately on the head. Having her company was certainly, certainly not a bad thing.
“What d’you think, lass?” he asked her, still thinking. “You think we’d be a match for this Gym Leader everyone’s talking about?”
If Pokemon came anywhere close to nodding, that’s what Isabella was currently doing. Gwaine chuckled and shook his head. He bit down on his lower lip in a strange, satisfied grimace.
