Character Name: Nico Robin Series: One Piece Timeline: Two years after the destruction of Ohara (when she's 10), so she has run away from at least one pirate crew and been betrayed by a number of semi-nice people on various islands. See One Piece chapters 391-398 Canon Resource Links: http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Robin (particularly the section on the tragedy of Ohara)
Affiliation: Trainer
Personality:
Nico Robin at age 10 is pretty much the same as she was at age 8, except maybe a bit more wary. She's had her home destroyed for reasons she doesn't understand- all they wanted to do was solve a historical mystery. Her home was known for its scholars and archaeologists, so a goal like that seemed the most natural thing in the world. Robin's a smart little cookie. She passed her Doctorate exam in Archaeology with a perfect score before her island was burned. But she doesn't show off her brains by using large words, unless she thinks you're someone who would know what she's talking about. Actually, she doesn't often bother with words in general, preferring to simply observe others. She may give an encouraging hum or nod to indicate her continued interest in what others might have to say to her, though mostly she just stares unabashedly wide-eyed at them. Ask her a question that requires explanation, or simply get to know her, though, and you'll find she can actually be quite the noisy little chatterbox, unafraid to speak her mind even in terms that are less than tactful.
Her mother, Olvia, left her to sail the seas when Robin was two, and she only ever saw her once again, just before the woman's death. Her father was killed prior, and Robin has no recollection of him. Robin was left in the care of her uncle, whose wife treated her little better than a slave. Robin has no concept of "family" or "acceptance", other than knowing that they must be wonderful. By this point, she expects people to turn on her or abandon her, even if they're friendly. She'll play nice with the other kids, but part of her will always be on the lookout for signs that they're about to do her in. She may even try to run from them before they have a chance to do so. But she'd really rather just find people that she can trust and stay with, companions who will accept her for who she is no matter what sort of trouble she may inadvertently get them into.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Robin's smart, and compassionate, and curious sometimes to a fault. She's lost a lot in her lifetime, so she knows how much small gestures of kindness matter to those experiencing pain. She's got plenty of her own problems, though, so don't expect her to pick up extras if she can avoid them. She's a quick study, and at least mildly interested in a number of topics. Her biggest fears are often part of her reality- being alone, being betrayed, being caught. She hasn't become the cold undercover assassin that we first meet in the series, so she believes herself incapable of purposely and severely harming another living being, in spite of the fact that when desperate, she will lash out with whatever she can think of. She's spent much of her life obeying orders or paying the price, making her a chronic enabler, for good or for ill.

The video starts with Robin sitting properly on a rock, with a small stack of books next to her. She picks one up and holds it in front of her.
I like these books. They talk about pokèmon.
She lowers the one she was displaying and takes a few more from the stack, piling them up on her lap. Then she holds another one up.
This one is about a place called Alph. I liked it the best.
She then sets the history book aside, and piles the remaining books from the original stack on her lap. She looks at the large pile, then at the solitary book next to her, and a sad expression comes over her face.
I wish I could find more books like that one. Do you have libraries here?
And with one last, beseeching look, the feed cuts off.

Third Person Sample:
For years, Robin's desire for a family that cared for her could be summed up in a single moment, when she happened to pass a young girl enthusiastically stating her wish for Home Rice for dinner. The girls parents each had hold of one of her hands, and she nearly swung back and forth between them. The father and mother laughed graciously, obviously amused by their little girl's antics. It was a brief moment, commonplace. But it was a moment that Robin had never experienced for herself. To have someone ask her what she desired without consequence, to have caring faces smiling at her in good humor, to feel loved and wanted.
This odd new world, where her Devil's Fruit accounted for nothing (though she still sunk like a rock in water) and a Marine (of all people) promised her protection seemed a strange place to be seeking what she knew was beyond her grasp. Her own mother abandoned her, that was the truth of it. If even she could find more important things to love, how much simpler, then, for strangers to do the same.
Still, Robin couldn't help but hope. At least she'd found companionship, never mind the fact that it came from the weirdest looking creature she'd ever seen- almost as tall as herself, with a tongue twice as long that seemed always to be licking her. It had shown itself loyal, and she returned in kind. Those she travelled with seemed friendly enough; the boys always punching each other and laughing together and playing games (they'd even invited her to play with them!), the older girl and the Marine always grumping and complaining but obviously not hating things enough to actually leave, and the funny man with the curly eyebrow who seemed to think she was worth fawning over. Every once in awhile, Robin thought it was too good for her, that one day soon their demeanor would change, the smiles and laughter turned to dark looks and harsh words. But as the days went by and their inevitable betrayal never came, she thought less of running, thought maybe this wasn't such a bad place after all.
"Oi, Robin-chan," Sanji called over his shoulder, breaking her reverie. "It's your turn to pick tonight. What should I make for dinner?"
Robin gawked for a moment, then a grin spread across her face. "Home rice!" she responded, beaming happily at nothing in particular.
