Yesterday I finally watched the last three episodes of Doctor Who, back to back. (I haven't gone back and read all your posts about it yet, though, since I had internet problems.)
Turn Left was a pretty good "Doctor Light" episode, except that the alien looked like a giant scarab and that Rose was being all kinds of mysterious, and how did she manage to get to the alternative timeline, anyway? (And wasn't she speaking in a funny way?)
The Stolen Earth was a companion-fest, of course. I kind of liked it, because of that. Bringing back all of them, and also bringing in the spinoffs like Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures was a bold thing to do, but it just goes to show that this show is its own fandom. But cliffhanger WTF? Felt like the showmakers were just having fun on our expense. "Ha ha, gotcha!"
Journey's End pissed me off. I enjoyed all the exes romping around being all kinds of resourceful, and Davros was of course nice to see again, in traditionally bad makeup. Though they could have brought in the Brig, too, if they were going to have such a companion-fest. And Jack's reaction to seeing three "Doctors" was kind of funny and very Jack.
But.
Rose being brought back to the Alt!Universe and fobbed off on the Alt!Doctor, who was human (ish) and thus not afraid to shag her... Stupid! Stupid! If there had been some kind of interaction between them before, a hint of any special connection, something of a promise of other things... Now it was almost on the Leela/Andred level of WTF. And Donna! I hated how Jack kind of didn't want to hug her. Why? He flirts with anything with a hole, really, so why all of a sudden treat Donna as if he were a narrow-minded twenty-year old twentieth century boy? Especially after flirting with Sarah Jane! And why was that supposed to be funny? I also hated the way they got rid of her. I really loved Donna and that was so unfair. Also a downright copy of how the Ninth Doctor had to regenerate due to having
The ending was really angsty. All in all, it was a terrible episode. In all senses of the word. It was very typical of RTD, over the top and weird and that kind of patched-together feel I tend to get from his eps -- that he starts out high and mighty with lots of ideas and threads that he can't really bring home or prune off, and thus ends up with lots of loose ends that he has to tie off somehow, and not always managing to do it in a very convincing or even good way. I also felt really bad about it and had bad dreams all night after watching it. And that's not how I want Doctor Who to make me feel. It was a hell of a bad ending to an otherwise (surprisingly) excellent series 4.
I'm setting my hopes for the Moff now. Please please save this boat!
