A/N: Written for trollmela. I hope this is something like what you wanted, it’s possibly a bit angstier than what you had imagined but I think I still managed to capture the more light-hearted family aspects a bit, too. I know I haven’t been around as much over the last few months but please know that I value our friendship so much. Have a very Merry Christmas!

It was Christmas Day and Michael walked in on a scene that was all too familiar. Raphael sitting watching while Lucifer, sat on the floor, combed through the feathers of Gabriel’s wings. Gabriel talking at a great volume and an even greater speed, mentioning gossip about the other angels; Uriel had once more failed to be promoted, the young angels Castiel and Balthazar had ended up in a spot of trouble in Paris.

Smiling, Michael took a seat next to Raphael, sharing a pointed look with his brother. “Are those two poking fun at the younger angels again?”

“Yes, like always.” Raphael smirked, nodding towards his brothers. “I think we’ll have to tell some stories of our own later, about a certain two archangels.”

“That sounds like a plan. Is everything set for dinner?”

“Lucifer helped Father with that earlier.”

“So you can stop worrying.” Gabriel stood then held out a hand to pull Lucifer up too. “And have some fun, brother. I know it’s a strange concept, Mr. Responsible.”

He bristled at the comment, a familiar one. “I can have fun.”

“Now,” Lucifer laid a hand on Gabriel’s shoulder, “I can actually testify to that. Just the other day, Michael and I were-”

“Doing something that they don’t need to know about.” Lucifer had promised not to tell and Michael raised his eyebrows, daring his brother to continue.

“Yes, you don’t need to know. Rest assured, though, it was fun.”

Michael relaxed at Lucifer’s smile, glad that he had the companionship of his brothers, especially at Christmas.

It was the first time in a long time that Michael had not been home in Heaven at Christmas time. It was unavoidable, a duty that he was determined to fulfil that was keeping him away, but he still regretted that he was not with his family.

Away from the carnage of the situation that he had been watching over, Michael looked out over the calm sea and wondered what his brothers were doing. The last year had been tense, more destruction than usual on Earth had meant that they’d all been busy and stressed. It had been a long time since he’d been able to spend an afternoon with his family and not worry about what was happening with the humans.

“You’re thinking too much.”

He turned to look at Lucifer. Sitting next to him, his brother was tracing patterns in the sand, small smile playing around his mouth. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here. Are you the reinforcement I asked for?”

“No.” Lucifer glanced up at him. “I’m just your brother, dropping by to see you on Christmas Day. Thought you might be feeling sorry for yourself.”

“It’s lonely out here.”

“Yes, it is.”

“How are things in Heaven?”

Lucifer shifted closer, their wings resting against each other’s. “Better now that everyone has had a rest. Gabe’s been telling jokes to any angel who will listen; I think most of them are actually glad of them this year.”

“He always did know how to lighten the mood. How is Father?”

“Impatient. He isn’t getting into the spirit of things this year.”

“Don’t blame him, brother.” He sighed. “He’s just worried about recent events.”

“Let’s not talk about that now. It’s Christmas; we should be having a good time.”

“I have to return to my station in an hour’s time.”

“Well, then.” Lucifer smirked. “We better make the most of the time we have.”

Christmas was a time for family on Heaven, just like on Earth. It was a time of the year when all of the angels, no matter what their rank, returned to their home if they were able to. It wasn’t always possible; sometimes, they were caught up doing things like helping a miracle along or being called to watch over a battle and didn’t manage to get back to Heaven on time. A few years back, Castiel hadn’t managed to return until the dawning of the New Year and Gabriel hadn’t even shown his face. This year, though, all were present apart from a few cupids who were busy in Spain. The absence of their father was still felt but no longer commented on; they’d learnt to avoid those arguments a long time ago. Michael sat at the head of the table now, instead. The oldest brother, burdened by responsibility but overjoyed at seeing all - but one - of his brothers once again.

Gabriel was sitting close by, already regaling an exasperated-looking Raphael with tales of the various pranks he’d pulled over the last year. Michael watched for a moment, wondering which year it was that Raphael had stopped indulging Gabriel by listening to him and started tuning him out. He, after all, could still remember Christmases when the four of them had been present, sneaking off midway through the celebrations to spend some time on their own, catching up with everything that they had missed and, sometimes, just sitting with each other with no needs for words shared.

“Things can’t stay the same way forever, brother.” Balthazar leaned down to speak into Michael’s ear as he walked past on his way to the buffet table. “It’s an unfortunate fact of life. Still, it’s Christmas, so you can get away with moping.”

“I’m not moping.” He turned to talk to Balthazar some more but the angel had already moved on, was clapping Castiel on the shoulder and asking him if he wanted more food. Some things, apparently, hadn’t changed.

Shaking his head, Michael moved to face the others again. He’d let Raphael suffer for a few more minutes before he tried to engage Gabriel in a conversation. Instead, he reached for some water and observed the scene around him. All of the tables were now full, angels of different ranks mixing with one another, sharing problems and triumphs. They all looked happy, eating food that they’d been dreaming of for months, spending time with their brothers and sisters.

He envied them. Some of them had no idea of what was destined to happen to the world that they so admired. Some of them did, but didn’t understand the extent to which is would be devastated. Others were happy just as long as they did their duty. But he, he alone understood what it would be like to go up against his own brother and win. Sometime soon, when the vessels had been born and the time was right, he would be half of the reason why Christmas never meant the same thing again. It was a burden he would have to bear.
