So I arrived in Bangkok today. I'm so glad I had booked a hostel ahead of time because I arrived in pure chaos and madness. There were literally 1000s of people walking around going from one place to another...and with this bag that I can barely carry, i didn't really know where to go. Now it was mostly young people and I remember everyone telling me how there are so many tourists in Thailand and I should meet some people. Ok so time to step out of my comfort zone. I saw this couple, young, english speaking, studying a map, so I went to them and introduced myself and asked if they wanted to share a taxi. Haha, they looked at me like I was the devil and just turned away without saying anything. Ok, no problem. I looked around and saw another girl looking confused, so I tried the same thing again, haha ok she looked at me like I was going to rob her and kind of ran away...so over this. I was originally going to take a taxi but decided to suck it up and take the bus instead. I got in with some other older people and realized quickly that the driver didn't speak english. I had the name of the hostel written down so I figured I would be ok. After driving for a bit and people getting off one by one I became concerned about where I was going. Not that he was taking me somewhere random but more so I have no idea where I am. Ok so he stops at this corner, and kind of points and tells me to get off. I try asking him about the hostel again and he just points and makes a few gestures with his hand, which I'm assuming mean left and right. Ok so I get off, show the paper to a few people, turn one way turn the other, and finally get to my hostel. Lub'd Bangkok.
Once inside I realized this place would be a bit different then the other places I had been to. It felt more like a dorm then a hostel. There was a place to eat and a place ot sign in, but instead of people sitting around socializing, everyone was on the computers or laptops...no one was talking. it was eerily quiet. As I was checking in I couldn't help but think that it may be difficult to meet people here but I was sure I'd be ok. Out of the corner of my eyes I saw a very tall pair of slim slender legs...but with a mans face. I was a bit confused. It took me forever to find my room, usually the ey corresponds with the floor and room but this made no sense. After going up and down a few times I finally just started trying every door until I got it, ugh my poor back. I really need to do something about this bag. When I got to my room, that...person was there. And I swear the face was a guy, the voice was a guy, but everything else looked female...hair, long nails, short tight skirt, really long legs..what is going on. Too tired, too confused, too exhausted going to sleep for a bit. P.S. Later on I learned the term lady boy and the world made a lot more sense..
Ok so this next part is a bit important, even as I write it I get goose bumps. I woke up like 2 hours later and was staring at the ceiling of my bunk bed. I was contemplating going out and looking for food, perhaps seeing if anyone downstairs wanted to join me, but everyone just seemed so cold, that weird guy/girl wasn't in the room either, it was just dark and empty and quiet. Maybe I should just sleep through the night and get up early and be productive tomorrow. No I should get up and eat. I believe I let my mind wander for about 20 minutes, or maybe it was 19...and then I slowly got up, found my flip flops and headed to the door. If everything that day hadn't gone exactly that way, if I hadn't spent exactly that much time in the room, if even one thing had been different, then I wouldn't have opened that door, and walked straight into Felix Flach. And then my life changed...
He was tall, and handsome, he had nice eyes which I noticed right away, he also had a pretty blonde by his side, which I also noticed right away. They always go for the blondes...and really me with my shaved head, haha not exactly attracting guys left right and center. He had a crooked smile, he was wearing a tshirt and shorts, they looked like swim shorts. He had a key in one hand, a backpack in the other, we looked straight at each other and said hi. He asked for help finding his room just as I offered, we laughed, his gf was Ashleigh. Once they dumped their stuff in their room they asked me what my plans were, and I told them I was going to go look for food, so were they and they asked me to join them. So we headed out for dinner. He had a really nice smile...btw.
So during dinner I learned a few things, firstly that they were not dating and had just met that day on the way out of the airport. She was 19, from London, traveling. He was 22 from Germany, taking 2 months to also travel. Taking time off school, working the festivals, trying to see the world, etc. We went to this really cute place and he got us all beer, my first Thai beer, it was good. And then he even paid for dinner which I thought was really nice, I mean it cost 2 dollars or something, but regardless, a nice gesture is noticed. Walking back we made some detours and checked out a few random places, a really cool hotel, a temple, some random statues that we took pics with. And then we made plans to hang out the next day since it was all of our first days here. I went to bed quite content, here I was worried about what Bangkok would bring me, and it brought me two great people and delivered them to my door. Looking forward to seeing what else this city has to offer.
