Taking a break from Exam Studying... anonymous December 5 2004, 00:51:31 UTC
As exciting as the Renaissance is, I need a bit of a break.

We all have our "pipe dreams", as you call them. You want to write a book on the subject of Video Game Retailers. I didn't laugh; we all have similar dreams. I've now written two plays, for the fun of it, and my second will be performed by the University's Theatre Company in February, unless Dr. Phil or Oprah threatens a lawsuit. I won't get into why that would occur.

I'd love to, some day, be able to write plays and movies for a living. I don't expect it to happen, but hey, I'd love to do it. And, I hold onto that little pipe dream.

Setting the bar too high is a problem that really can't be solved anywhere but in your own head. There's always a risk of doing that, and it almost always occurs. Lucas did it with the first Star Wars Trilogy, if we want to use a movie analogy.

We all have our "Is this ever going to happen to me?" moments. Myself, at the age of 18, have had several already. It's always easy to answer them pessimistically, and it's tempting to let them go. But, it's obvious that you aren't doing that, and that's always a strong start.

I'd love to be able to give you some advice, but I'm 5 years younger than you are with much less experience. The only things I can think of is actually talking to people who have "broken in", persay. People who have written books on the Gaming Industry. Fuck, disguise it as an interview for Inside Pulse. They get Press, you might be able to pick their brain a little. As you say, you're not sure what else you NEED to do to break into the joint, so it's kind of tough to know if you're doing enough. Maybe if you answer the first question (How) you can better answer the second.

And now, back to Niccolo Machiavelli and The Prince, and another hour of Western Civ goodness.

I think part of it is that I want to be noticed by others and not the way around. I'm not going to beg. I guess someone presenting me with the opportunity I'd kill for would bolster my ego to levels previously unfathomed. I guess that's secretly what I want, especially since I'm not the world's best self-promoter.

Congrats on your plays, dude. That's some cool stuff. And take notes on Macchiavelli - probably the most practical philosopher you'll read, and the one you'll actually reflect on later in life.

PS - I never would have guessed you're 18. I figured you'd be 20-something.

I'm usually quite big on the self-promotion aspects of life. And, as good as your work is, there is no guarantee that something is simply going to come your way and fall into your lap. As someone who is 5 years your junior, and thus has no right to really comment on any of this, I say that there is more to "making it" than writing and waiting. In an ideal world, maybe, but it is important to at least give yourself a greater opportunity of being spotted; pimping yourself isn't compromising yoour principles, but instead increasing the odds of making it.

Because I'm kind of big on segueways, lets look at Niccolo Machiavelli. His ideal Prince was someone who did everything he could for himself as a leader, not worrying about appeasing others. This meant doing whatever he wanted, yes, but it also meant doing everything for the betterment of his own position. So many people have the core values of "The Prince", that of intelligence and ruthlessness and strength, etc. It is those who are Machiavellian, who fight for what they want and what is better for them, that succeed. It is those writers than not only writer great stuff, but also do everything they can to make it heard so it has the greatest impact that are truly ideal writers.

And now, since Machiavelli is SO three chapters ago, some time with Louis XIV and Absolutism is Western Civilization.
