Chapter 19

They still hadn’t talked to their parents since they got back together.

Nino was so anxious that he really didn’t want to confront his parents. Especially Mom. He wasn’t sure what she would say. Even though now they had passed the challenge and that mean they could be together officially, he wasn’t so sure if she would accept them by her heart or only by force. So he was reluctant. Every time they had been about to talk to Mom, Nino had backed away. He told Ohno that he still couldn’t. Ohno just hold Nino’s hand tightly and kissed him lightly on his cheek, as if reassuring Nino, It’s fine, I’m here.

Before Nino could gather enough courage to have a proper talk with them, Mom was the one who made first move.

That night, when Dad was outside and there were only three of them at home, their Mom had called Nino and Ohno to her room. There was something in her voice that told him the moment had come. Though he knew he had to deal with this sooner or later - he had to have this conversation after all but he was still nervous. With Ohno’s reassuringly firm hold of his hand, they stepped inside Mom’s room together.
“Kazu,” His mom said, and for a second, her eyes were sad. Nino’s heart clenched. Was she forced to accept them or was she going to accept them not because she wanted to? What about her condition...? Nino didn’t dare to think about it. His heart doubled its rate as he once again remembered their nightmare three years ago.

His Mom turned to Satoshi and smiled slightly. “Satoshi-kun.”
“Mom,” Satoshi nodded, and they both sat down in front of her. Nino couldn’t speak properly since his mind was whirled with thousands of questions and wonders, so it was Ohno who carried on the conversation.
“It’s nice to have you back home again, Satoshi,” He heard his Mom said, and with the way brightening of her eyes, Nino could relax a little, because he knew she really meant it. Everyone was happy that Ohno was home again...
“Hai,” Satoshi smiled “I missed being at home, all the time I was in university.”
They kept talking stuff like that and Nino started to ask himself where this conversation was going. But then, silence suddenly filled around since they ran out of things to talk randomly. Mom turned to Kazu quietly.

“Kazu,” She said, and Nino’s heart almost stopped beating. “I have something to tell you that I want.”
“Mom,” Nino tried to swallow the lump in his throat. This was his only chance, and because she was his Mom, he was the one who had to say this, not Satoshi. He had to tell her what was really important to him, right now... “I know what you want to say, but I... I have also something to tell you too. Please listen to me first.”
“Kazu...” His Mom started, but he cut her off quietly.
“Mom, I still love Satoshi.” He said quickly before he could stop himself. “I mean, it’s been three years already, I thought I forgot him but...” He glanced at Ohno for a second before turning away with his cheeks reddened involuntarily.

She tilted her head and looked at him, when she opened her mouth to say something, Nino cut her off again.
“I know you don’t want us to be like this, I know all of that,” Nino bit his lips. Ohno’s hand had reached his and Ohno squeezed his hand tightly. “But I really... I’m sorry...”
“Kazu,” Mom said gently. Nino could feel tears slowly building up inside his eyes, and he tried his best to hide it - he didn’t want to cry, not now when he was supposed to be happy due to the reality that he and Ohno could be together.

Before Nino noticed it, Mom already stood up and came to sit beside him.
And wrapped her arms around him gently.

“I am the one who should say sorry,” She said, her voice also broke with emotion “Kazu, I am sorry.”
“Wha...” Nino sputtered. He hugged his mom back reluctantly, and Ohno just shifted away a little further to give them some space they needed.
“I shouldn’t have reacted like that,” she said quietly “I shouldn’t have rejected you like that.”
“Mom...” Nino’s tears finally rolled down, but this time it wasn’t because of sadness. He buried his face onto his Mom’s shoulder, felt like dreaming “I’m sorry...”
“No,” she shook her head as she turned to kiss his temple slightly “You have no fault. It’s mine. I can’t believe I’ve made my beloved sons suffered so much for all these years.”
And she cried. She cried so much that her tears wet Nino’s shirt, and her arms around him tightened. Nino still couldn’t register what was happening... The happiness grew inside him, and the emotion was so strong that it was hard to breath. He felt like everything - every sadness, every burden he had been feeling throughout the years - just simply disappeared. His Mom kept saying her sorry, and Nino hugged her more tightly, unable to say the words It’s alright, everything is alright because the world got stuck in his throat since he was also crying his heart out.
Finally, after all of these years...
Was this just a dream, Nino wondered.

“I realized,” Mom said when she took back her calmness after a while. She wiped Nino’s tears away gently “I realized that you’re more important to me than those other things, Kazu.”
“Mom...” Nino smiled with one of his truly happy smile at his Mom. This was what he always had wanted - he had always prayed for this since the very first day he fell in love with Ohno.
“I watched you being so heartbreaking day after day...” Mom said quietly, she fixed a strand of hair on his forehead “And I realized how terrible I was as a parent. Since then, I always kept wishing that Satoshi would come back to you soon and mend your heart.”
And she turned to Ohno, who still hadn’t said a word but the subtle tears in his eyes said enough.
“Thank you, Satoshi,” She said, and Ohno came to beside her. They hugged each other tightly when she continued. “Thank you for still loving Kazu after three years.”
“I’m the one who should be thankful, Mom,” Ohno chuckled quietly “He still loves me, that is the most important thing.”
And they grinned at each other. Nino couldn’t tell what was happier for him: that Ohno had finally kept his promise and had come back to him, or that his Mom had finally accepted both of them and truly wanted them to be happy. His heart felt like exploded from happiness.
“Please take care of Kazu from now on.” She said with a smile and Ohno nodded.
“I will, Mom.” He grinned “Thank you so much for your understanding, Mom. I’m really happy...”
“I love Kazu,” She said and patted Ohno’s shoulder “And I love you too, Satoshi. I love both of you.”
“We love you, too.” Nino and Ohno said at the same time, and they grinned at their Mom, who also smiled at them with encouragement.
“Dad will talk to you soon,” She said. “He already knew this since the day Satoshi left home.”
“Eh?” Ohno looked confused. “He already knew...?”
“He already knew this day would come,” She shrugged “He’s your Dad, after all.”

-------------------------------

Mom was right. When they realized it, they had already been taken outside of their home by Dad. He walked with them around their town aimlessly, and at first, no one said anything. Nino, still confused of what was happening, didn’t know what to say. Ohno, on the other hand, he looked calm and somehow, relaxed when they were walking together. It felt like Ohno and Dad were communicating to each other without words.

The one who broke the silence was Dad, after two rounds of walking around.
“Satoshi,” he called, and Ohno turned to him. Nino could even see Ohno smiling a little.
“Dad,” Ohno titled his head. They all stopped at their track. Dad looked at Ohno in his eyes and he didn’t say anything more. The silence was there, but it wasn’t as threatening as it used to be years ago. It was a comfortable silence.
Then, Dad suddenly stepped towards Ohno and wrapped his arms around his son. Ohno was caught off guard, he looked surprised but he also hugged his Dad back in an instant.
They didn’t say anything until Dad released Ohno. And Dad turned to Nino, he smiled and hugged Nino too.

Nino had never thought it could’ve been as simple as this. Since the first time their love was revealed, he never once in his mind thought that he could be accepted like this. Dad wasn’t like Mom, he didn’t say anything, but his action had said it all. Nino had never felt this happy for a very long time - and he felt like his world was completed now, with the beloved persons staying around him.
“Make sure you two will be happy,” was Dad’s only words that night. But it meant everything to Ohno and Nino. They could do nothing else but nodded happily at Dad, who smiled at them and waved his hand when he returned to their home, left Nino and Ohno alone.

Ohno turned to Nino and smiled sweetly.
“I told you, right?” Ohno said, and Nino couldn’t stop his grin. He couldn’t stop his heart exploding from happiness. This was always what he had been wanting: to be accepted and to be blessed by their parents, and finally, after 3 years of trying, they had gained it. It was worth to wait, because now, after the period of time that felt like a lifetime, their love was stronger and never again their parents or anyone else would question them.
Nino turned to Ohno who happily gathered him in his arms.
“Satoshi,” Nino whispered into Ohno’s shoulder when they were hugging each other tightly. “Satoshi.”
The name of Ohno was so dear that Nino wanted to call this name forever...
“Hm...?” Ohno smiled into Nino’s hair as he brushed Nino’s cheeks lightly.
“Thank you,” Nino said quietly. He couldn’t be more grateful that now he had Ohno in his life. If it wasn’t Ohno, maybe they could have never been together. “Thank you, Satoshi.”
“Kazu,” Ohno kissed Nino’s cheeks with a grin “Kazu, thank you too.”
“Why thank me?” Nino laughed “I couldn’t do anything. I didn’t even know what you were planning... I didn’t bear any of what you had borne all the time. Satoshi, seriously, what if I’d become hating you too much that I could never love you again?”
“That’s why I’m saying thank you,” Ohno looked at Nino’s eyes warmly “Thank you for still loving me after all those I’d done to you.”
Nino blushed. Ohno continued with a smile.
“I’d been scared all the time. I was scared every day,” He hugged Nino again “But because it was you, and because I believed in your love... I dared to accept the challenge.”
“It’s both of us who makes this,” Ohno concluded. And Nino nodded happily. It had been so bad that they thought it could be the end of everything, but finally it turned out to a bright one. Nino smiled, and so Ohno, and their hand entwined with each other in a silent promise.

Let’s stay like this forever.
