The internet changed my life too -- it was the vehicle which brought SO and I together :)
I'll throw a grenade: The first thing I automatically thought of re the second article was Pantsuit Nation. That is, a lot of people -- mostly educated white women, in my experience -- espouse a lot and "claim" a lot but, as the article points out, have very little actual experience to back themselves up. I think of my college roommate, who walks what she talks -- she works at a family shelter, she organizes a lot of social justice-related activities for her city, she's right out there on the front lines when it comes to things the article discusses. Compare that to the lip service which , IMO, was what Pantsuit Nation was partly about (and please, don't give me the "but that's not all it was" argument. I know a lot of it had to do with women teaching their daughters an important lesson. I'm not talking about that aspect).
ETA: Another thing I took away from the second article was the reek of privilege. It's easy to consider yourself X or Y. It's another thing to actually practice what you consider yourself.
