We've got a great crop of contestants already signed up for the tourney. I was thinking we might have to give someone a first round bye to round us up to 8 contestants, but we're already over 16. I don't think we're going to get close to 32, and for those of you with questionable math skills, tournaments are easiest when the number of contestants is a power of 2.
I've got a couple alternate bracket ideas I'm playing around with.
So here are the scenarios, as determined by the final contestant count.
17-19: Standard 4 round contest, with one or more randomly determined one on one on one's in the first round.
20-23: 4 round contest, with one or more byes in the first round, and a one on one on one in the championship.
24: 4 round contest, with a one on one on one in the championship.
25-27: 4 round contest, with one or more one on one on ones in the first round, and a one on one on one in the championship.
28-31: Standard 5 round contest, with one or more byes in the first round.
32: Standard one round contest
Chances are best that we'll end up between 17 and 23. Each round will have a theme, and here's what my thought is on the schedule of rounds. (I want to keep the number of speech bubbles consistent over all the different matches in a given round)
First round: Standard (unthemed) with one speech bubble.
Quarter-finals: Lyrics theme with two speech bubbles.
Semi-finals: TBD (Suggestions? I want it to be something anyone can do, but more specific than just "movie quotes")
Championship: Blind Man's Bargain It's a SEEEEECCCCRRRREEEETTTT!
With so many entrants, I can now state that second and third place will win nifty trophies as well. If we end up with a one on one on one in the championship, the votes in that single match will determine the placing of the top three. If we end up with a standard contest setup, there will be a consolation match for the two semi-final losers to determine third place.
