two days ago (on the 1st), i crapped out four new song embryos. just melodies and chords, with no lyrics for all but one song. i hadn't written any actual non-instrumental songs since november, so that was cool. the song circle at the practice space this week got my head back into songwriting mode i think. especially after seeing morgan from your rival play. he's only 20, but is extremely talented, like in a 20-year-old nick delffs kind of way (but less dylan and more beatles). he just has that natural talent that the other 99% of songwriter/musicians would kill for. you'll see his or his band's name around in these next few years, fer sure. and he's a really good dude too.
in any case, here is a demo of one of those songs i wrote on the 1st. it's called "before i knew." i tried some spookies-ish recording tricks, even though they don't work nearly as well when recorded on a computer in an apartment.
and here are the lyrics, even though they may change a lot later:
whenever i'm awake, i wonder if i'm sleeping
and walking in a dream, the thing that they call living
whenever i'm asleep, i wonder what i dream of
to me it's all the same thing to dream while i'm dreaming
and if i can recall the smell of '87
a phantom potpourri, an out of business pharmacy
the more that i recall, the more that i've forgotten
but there in the haze, a maze of ancient ruins
and it's never gonna be the same
as it was before i knew my name
i feel a bit confused over things i can't explain yet
i'm going out of mind, and i'm going out of body
and every single night i'm going deeper in there
the antiquated past of the things i could sense then
