a lot of stuff has happened in the past week, or so it feels like anyway. on saturday was the legendary first
spookies show. i think it exceeded all of our expectations. it was definitely the best first show that i've ever played (aside from maybe my first solo mini-set at the cafe delirium open mic ten (!!) years ago). the place was packed, people were into it and we all had fun. i loved partyinnnn with the other two bands (woolen men & paper brain) and our entourages at the practice space after the show. it reminded me of the old mondo hollywood/shaky hands days when you liked the bands you were playing with enough to hang out with them outside of a show.
as for the spookies' longterm plan, it seems to be thus: record the album all on the four-track, starting next week. in february, we play our second show. in april, we must be finished with the album and also play our third show. in june, we play another show. the rest of the summer will include some sort of release of the spookies album and hopefully a set at pdx pop now and/or musicfest NW. those are our goals anyway, and i think they're definitely attainable. i'm so excited for this band. the songs are amazing, IMO. we have a really good thing going, and i hope it flourishes. yes, i just seriously used the verb "to flourish."
last week i finished my
december digital 7" single, but i waited until today to unfurl it because i didn't want to cross wires with spookies. it's
"ctrl+z" with "octopus" as the B-side. it couldn't be more different from spookies, either! it's almost entirely electronic except for vocals and some guitar. i originally wanted mayhaw to play bass on "ctrl+z" but i decided to go pretty much full electronic with it. sorry mayhaw, i'm sure you would have come up with a rad bass part if it weren't for my tiresome meddling.
monday was the anniversary of my car accident. what a shitty day to be reminded of. sometimes i wish i didn't remember dates so well. in celebration, i barely left the apartment, and i certainly didn't drive. because just when you think it's okay to go to safeway for some chinese food, you could find yourself in a four-car pileup. no thanks. i played minecraft all day.
this week,
i'm in the mercury with my list of top five albums of 2011. i have always wanted to be included in either the merc's or the ww's year-end lists. i come up with these lists on my own just for fun anyway, so it's awesome to see it in print. i have to admit that i fudged my list a tiiiiny bit for the mercury; i put coldplay at #3 instead of #1, because i wanted them to actually publish it! i am the only person out of all the lists that included coldplay. i rule.
it's also awesome that i'm on the first page and isaac from jackpot is on the second page. CHURCH. (although i like isaac okay, i just like the symbolism of my list being near the top and jackpot's being way below me.) and note: tony (the hipper-than-thou dantes DJ asshole who fired me) is nowhere to be found. i hope those jackasses at jackpot see my list and...well, i don't know what, but do, say or think something. you feel me? although, tony will undoubtedly see my list and make fun of it, but that's what he does. no one is cooler than he is.
other than ALLLL that stuff, just lots of christmas things happening, especially with alyssa's family. her family has loads of christmas gatherings, so we've been going to lots of those. and more to come this weekend, obviously.
what's a plunge?
