today was my first practice with mayhaw and colin. this is mayhaw's new band, called THE SPOOKIES. we have a practice space, over by ron toms. we're sharing it with the woolen men. it used to be blitzen trapper's practice space, from around the furr times. it's like a little band apartment. it's rad.
so here is the deal with the spookies: it consists of myself on guitar, colin on drums, jeff on guitar, ben senabria (the shaky hands manager and good ol friend) on bass and mayhaw on vocals and songs. but so far now it's just me, mayhaw and colin practicing. and mayhaw and colin have played a couple times before i started today. mayhaw's bringing people into the fold gradually, which is probably a smart thing. we're working toward an eight song set, and all of the songs are written and ready to learn and play.
we had a long practice--a good three hours. most of that was learning and playing three songs. that's pretty rad. super drilling the songs. it's different from pugs practices where we play a few songs and then gush about the beatles (hey, it's band bonding yo). and also different from post-mayhaw shaky hands practices where we play the set a couple times and that's pretty much it because everyone knows the songs already, whether they've played them or not. and tiger house practices, where it was like fishing into the void and seeing what worked, then working what worked over and over. it's pretty freaking fascinating how different bands work. i'm a big fan of drilling songs though, even if it is quite tiring.
i felt bad afterward because colin wanted to go grab a beer (cuz he has a newborn kid and wednesday are his days to have fun), but i'd already made dinner plans with alyssa. alyssa and i are big on making dinners at home. that's kind of our time to hang after doing our own things most of the day. we cook and eat and watch things together. but now that i know that colin likes to hang out after practice, i will totally do that afterward next time. i want to have fun with my dudes. i am all about band morale. i want to do whatever gets the band into the rad zone.
what's a parf-parf?
