long day today. like bubble tape. chowder woke me up at 7 and i couldn't get back to sleep because of thinking of the accident and all i had to do today. i got up at 8 (remember: early for me) because i couldn't get back to sleep, and i was expecting a call from my insurance company in the morning anyway. after a couple hours of drinking coffee and doing crosswords and wasting time on the internet, a dude from progressive called.
there wasn't much to discuss until he'd talked to everyone else in the accident, but he did say i needed to go to the tow yard that my car was at and release it to them to inspect. i also needed to get stuff out of it...not only various minor recording equipment like mic stands and a computer monitor, but all of my old tapes and whatever else had accumulated in my car in the nine and a half years i've had it. so around 12:30, alyssa and i drove out to NW portland to the tow yard aaaaand it was the wrong location. drove back to the SE location and found my car. the guy in the office was surprisingly courteous and helpful. most people at car places are not that way, especially to a longhair like me.
alyssa and i cleaned out all the important stuff out of my car (and most of the garbage, of which there was much). alyssa took some photos of the car too, some of which can be seen below. it was almost dark when the accident happened yesterday, so the extent of the damage was a little more obvious today.
after that, alyssa and i finished off a bit of christmas shopping on hawthorne. it was insane. i was driving her car, and while i was fine driving after what happened, the insanity of parking, pedestrians, terrible drivers, etc. made us both very on edge. i couldn't wait to get home. also while we were shopping, jim ferguson--the very nice dad-aged fellow (born in 1944) who hit me yesterday--called me and left a voice mail about getting couple more pieces of info from me.
i called him back when i got home and we got those few extra things squared away. he said him and his female passenger (probably his wife, but i don't wanna assume) were still ok and everything. i apologized again and he said in an almost teacherly way, "accidents happen, which is why they're called accidents!" he also thanked me for being "a gentlemen" about everything and i thanked him for being so level-headed and helpful, since i'm sure i was anything but at the time of the accident. so jim ferguson rules. if you're gonna get in a gnarly accident, he's the guy to do it with. i'm sure he's also a very good dad to a couple of people in their 30s or 40s.
oh, and in the midst of all this stress, i did find out that i won second place in the christmas music contest! it was my weezerfied (green album era) version of "we wish you a merry christmas." pump audio said in an email to me: "We received a lot of great hard rock versions of holiday songs, but yours were by far the best!" i thought mine were pretty good, but i was also sure that other people would be even better. i guess not?! i get $250 for it. not bad for two or three hours of work!
in addition to talking to mr. ferguson, i talked to my insurance agent again and i filled out a DMV accident report. whew. when there are four cars involved in an accident and you only have various scraps of wet paper with often obscured handwriting to deal with, it makes it feel like serious fucking math homework. but with that taken care of, i think that's the last of the immediate things to do.
jeff picked me up at 5:30 for shaky hands practice. it was a pretty short practice, but after a very stressful 24 hours, it felt so good to play some music. nick also mentioned that the london-based label
broken sound is releasing realms out of reach fer sure. they are also releasing the new album by band friends
forest fire. nick and mayhaw both played on that one too. there are no real details yet but hellz, realms finally has a label! good excuse to tour europe too. obviously we're still wanting a US label to put it out too, but this will do for now.
after that: came home, ate spaghetti, watched bridalplasty, played wii for hours. DAY DONE. FINALLY.
what's an ambient?
