hey! the willamette week did
a writeup of "bad vibrations," the first song on my album public domain rainbow. i totally didn't think that song (or most of PDR for that matter) had a hint of nerd rock, but i guess i can't escape my influences. that is a good thing i think though. i can't complain about being compared to TMBG. it could be worse, i could be compared to weird al (and it has happened before).

today nick delffs came over again to redo the sequencing mockup of the album (space between songs mostly). he seriously gets into that stuff. he said it's one of his favorite parts of the process. admittedly, it's not something that i've ever really paid lots of attention to, but it is important, so it's cool to hone in on this part of things this time.
with this album totally done except for mastering, i asked nick what he thought of the album compared to the others. he said he thinks this album is easily the best yet. he said it's because he's been able to take the time do everything more or less exactly how he wants it, and that let it die was just too rushed and he actually doesn't really like it at all now (i told him no, LID rules). he said lunglight sounds harsh and weird in a bad way. and with the first album, the bass tone sounds like crap (agreed, though it was no fault of mayhaw's at all) and he doesn't like his vocals because he didn't realize you could comp takes and spend time to polish them up as opposed to just using single takes.
it's interesting to hear all that, because i've listened the shit out of all four albums. i think all of them are great, and each one has been better than the one before it. well...i'm still on the borderline of whether the new album is better than let it die, but they're so different from each other that it's kind of pointless to try. let it die is laser focused and produced so tightly (in no small part thanks to jake and jay pellicci), yet realms out of reach is meandering, loose and pastoral in the most awesome way. like, it's a really beautiful album. yet, let it die has boner fide HITS. i like to think that in an alternate universe, it was the next nevermind. i can still hope for it to become a pinkerton i guess.
if i sound like a wiener-sucking fanboy, it's cuz i am. i've loved this band ever since we all first saw them (consisting of colin, paul and nick) at their second show in jeff's basement on february 28, 2004. I'VE WANTED TO BE INSIDE THEM ALWAYS. when mayhaw offered to play bass when paul left, i secretly thought, "DAMN, i should have thought of that!" the band doesn't exactly operate like a well-oiled machine, and we've been in a weird spot ever since jake left, i joined, KRS dropped us, mayhaw left, nick's having a kid, etc. but it's totally worth it because nick delffs writes great songs and i am still so stoked to be a part of them, and to be in a band where lots of people appreciate those songs. and we have a great album on the way! these are things to be excited about!
yesterday, i watched that making of born to run movie (wings for wheels). man, that was a great watch. i've always liked springsteen (and that album especially), but that movie made me realize he's the rill dill. just having the insight of how he approaches his songwriting was really interesting to me. you should watch it over and over and over!
