Depends on the situation.

Silk and Satin are horrid for long term wear as it doesn't allow anything to breathe, where as cotton does.

Lace, however, is always an acceptable alternative.

I think Linen has also been used in the case of undergarments, though not as breathable as cotton.

I'm a lace for the sexy and cotton for the practical type of lady myself.

... not that proper ladies tend to talk about their undergarments in public, but who am I kidding?
