Mr. Bono's Opus

For what it’s worth, a brief thought on the new U2 album from a U2 fan; I would normally not bother y’all with something like this, but with all the banal slop that normally might grace these pixels, something of real significance deserves equal opportunity.

In a nutshell, this album sounds like each and every U2 album ever made - a master work - and in saying that, I mean that it is as near perfection as I have every heard popular music to be. That's not to say that it is their best album - though with each successive listen I realize it will prove to be - but rather that everything the band is and ever has been is here, as perfect as if we were to tap right into their collective soul.

For as much as I adore the pseudo-pretension of their 90s work, I now feel as though I've been let inside: rewarded for my years of faithful service. I realize now that I owe them the purchase of an iPod; a meagre offering of thanks for that which they have conferred upon me: Beauty. Joy. And a Radiohead-inspired special edition booklet just enigmatic enough to keep me from describing it at this time of night.
