Yesterday, Orientation:
I'm a working girl now.(And I kinda hate it.) Well, I am now a stocker at Garden Ridge. Today was my orientation. I was given a tour of the store and was explained how things work (though I don't think I retained as much as I needed to remember). I was given a little overview of how the cashier works, and then introduced to the "floor." All my coworkers are decently nice. I really liked one of the people I worked with, named Dawn. She's only been there for 2 weeks but seems to have a good hang of her job, so she was helpful and also talkative so that helped out some. After my (only one) 15 minute break at 1, I worked alone for the rest of the afternoon til 4. That really sucked because if I had a question, I didn't have anyone to rely on unless someone was passing by. My supervisors all left by 2 or 3 in the afternoon, so when it was like 20 minutes until my time to clock out and I still had a lot to do, I started getting flustered. By then, I still had 2 boxes to open and put out, to return my palette to the back with the palette jack thingy (awkward to use), sweep up my very messy area covered in styrofoam bits, take my trash and boxes to the back, take a broken item up to the front, and return my carts...all in 20 minutes. I got one of those boxes opened and luckily it had just one very big vase in it, but the other had a bunch of lamps that needed putting together, so I only did the first box. I didn't finish in perfect time, I went over 4 pm, but luckily Debbie, the chick who hired me, said it's ok to go over to finish up your work. I drove home worrying about how the rest of my life is going to go if I don't find an actual career or at least a decent job. My poor feet and legs hurt :( Tomorrow isn't going to be fun. I have to be in at 8. I then have Sunday off, but then I have to work 6am-noon shifts for the next 4 days. Hmm...when was the last time I had to get up in the 4 o'clock hour? I can't even remember. Whenever it was, it was a really really long time ago. I'm going to be a zombie this upcoming week. I guess I'll have to learn how to take naps. Rick's being sweet about everything, though. He seems concerned for me, and he's making small adjustments to try to fit in time so we can talk before I have to go to bed. He knows that me being serious about having a job is so we can be together. Sure, I have to grow up, pay for stuff, and do something since I'm out of school, but Rick is my motivation.
Now that I've talked/complained about my first day and upcoming time at work (bleh, I don't like that word), I should say that Mike has given me the heads up about an opening at the library that I've been hoping for, so tomorrow after my shift, I'll be heading to the library and applying there. It's less hours but higher pay, and only 3 days a week. If I want to make more money, I can try to find another part time job at maybe 20 hours a week. I already applied to the new Ace Hardware coming to town (nearby too), so I'm crossing my fingers that I'll get a call from them sometime in the future. Oh yeah, I forgot to say that Mike's going to put in a good word for me at the library which is sooooo nice. Well I must head for bed so I can get up super early (6:15 is early for me!) tomorrow.
Wish me luck for a better job and for surviving what's to come at Garden Ridge.
Today, Day 2:
Not nearly as bad as the first. I think I'm cranky and pessimistic after the first day of everything I get started with, though my only previous examples would be the start of each school semester and school year. Working along with people is so much better, and I met some more of my coworkers. The candle section had to be redone so everything was getting cleared off shelves and categorized into different carts and whatnot. I'm thinking if I get to work mostly with others and I can handle my 6am-noon shifts, it won't be so bad. I'm still trying for the library job though. It's a rainy mess out, but I'm going to head to the library soon to apply. Just need to get cleaned up and pull my jeans out of the dryer (they got wet crossing the parking lot).
