The Free Peoples rarely beat the Shadow through conflict. You really need to mostly focus on the Fellowship and only try a military win if you're getting wonky dice and/or the Shadow is rolling really poorly on their sieges.
The Free Peoples are also the harder side to play in that game. There are considerably more options at the beginning, and there isn't one that's obviously better than the others. The only really big choice the Shadow has to make is whether they send Easterlings North or wait for the Corsairs card and send them West.
Plus, the game is actually really well balanced. It only seems overwhelming to the Free Peoples if you're looking to score a military win.
I love the game because it's one of the best blendings of mechanics and themes I've encountered. Justifying things in the game using the movies makes me sad, though.
