For christmas I got "War of the Ring". Which is a huge board game based on the famous "Lord of the Ring" epic. I played it with Michelle and she handed my ass to me.
It was both our first time playing and there are a ton of rules. So you get these little armies to move around the board one person plays the good guys and the other person plays the bad guys. We were assigned whether we were good or evil randomly and I came out good. It occurred to me that in order for the story to be any good the good guys have to overcome insurmountable odds, Sam Gamgee says as much in the movie.
I learned, to my dismay, that when I recruit people they come from a recruit pile. When my people die they go in the dead pile where they STAY. Michelle's orcs when they are killed go back into the recruit pile. It makes since, because in the movie they just reanimate some orcs they dig out of the ground. But still! Not only that to start off with I have less people and she gets these Nazgul that can move from any location to any location. Oh and that isn't even the worst. The worst is that in order for the nations to muster reinforcements they have to be at war. There is a political track that I have to spend effort to move the nations from peace to war. So at the end I think there were still two nations that were just coming on the scenes. I cheered when they were crushed by the orcs. "good. You see what you get!"
It was a fun game I hope to play it again soon.
