Random Lake Stuff, and book thoughts

A ton of kids invaded the break room at work today. Apparently some kind of school orchestra, although what *exactly* they were doing (other than blocking the soda station) there, I'm not really sure.
It was pretty hot today, but I was at Ghost Hunt, where air-conditioned air from inside the ride (and the fact that it's covered) keep things pretty cool. And everyone there was pretty good about rotating positions, although I knew that trying to do it every half hour was too optimistic. Every time I was Unload Attendent, though, I kept telling people to exit "thisaway," which I blame on listening to the OCR of Curtains so much lately (it only came out on Tuesday, after all).

Being on Ghost Hunt gave me plenty of time to think, which is why I suddenly realized what it was that's been bugging me about Jason Fforde's Thursday Next series (I recently read the second book, Lost in a Good Book, and now I'm reading the third book, The Well of Lost Plots). The main idea is that books are their own little worlds, connected by "the great library" where characters from all over can mingle and occasionally jump to our world. In the same way, certain people from our world can jump into books and interact with the characters, even changing the plot if they're not careful. What I don't really get is how the characters in the books can exist linearly. I mean, the main character can jump into any point in a book, and the characters are aware that they're characters in a book, so...I just don't get it.
