It's not so much the fact that the ship is out there (I even ship it a little myself, hahahaha oops), but that I periodically worry about it becoming canon. That would sadden me. Heh, it's very difficult not to get ridiculous about one's ships. Shipping comes with an implied emotional investment. :P

I mean, firstly there's just my knee-jerk DDD: at the Winchesters being in love/ending up together with anyone but each other. I can kind of handle it if they also love each other, but there are reasons in the story which make them choose the other person, as long as the story is presented as UTTERLY TRAGIC, because sometimes I do like to break my own heart. But other than that I mostly avoid non-wincest pairings unless it's just casual sex.

Yep. No need to explain this, it's pretty typical.

Which I found UTTERLY TRAUMATIZING, and then never read Dean/Castiel again.

Hahaha aw <3 Yeah, honestly? Most Dean/Cas writers that I've seen care about Sam (there's one obvious exception, some bitch who posts every single fic with the disclaimer "If I owned it, Sam would have stayed dead" and we're all like IDIOT, ARE YOU FOR REAL?), but he's often absent, either because Dean and Castiel need to be alone in order to fuck or because the story is focusing on the development of that relationship, and giving Sam equal time would just distract from the point.

Making it the Sam & Dean & Castiel show would be healthy for the entire fandom. -_-

Thanks for explaining! Your thought process seems pretty typical (but not in the "oh this is so typical of them" way, don't worry XD) and understandable to me.
