Ahaha, okay, I love that you feel that way about hardcore Castiel/Anna shippers. xD *amused*

I'm not sure my knee-jerk reactions are based on any kind of logic, TBH. I guess I can think of a bunch of possible factors, but I couldn't really tell you how significant each of them actually were.

I mean, firstly there's just my knee-jerk DDD: at the Winchesters being in love/ending up together with anyone but each other. I can kind of handle it if they also love each other, but there are reasons in the story which make them choose the other person, as long as the story is presented as UTTERLY TRAGIC, because sometimes I do like to break my own heart. But other than that I mostly avoid non-wincest pairings unless it's just casual sex.

There's is also the fact that waaay back when, I was much more open to poking around the pairing, and I went out looking for some and ended up reading this fic where Sam had gone evil and taken over as demon general, and Dean and Castiel were together. It was outsider pov on Dean and Castiel, and I kept thinking there was going to be some kind of scene with Dean having epic angst over Sam, but then one of the characters said Dean had (AND THE FIC ACTUALLY USED THIS WORD) replaced Sam with Castiel. And then instead of some kind of redemption scene, which I had been expecting, the fic ended with them going into the final battle, implicitly going off to kill Sam. Which I found UTTERLY TRAUMATIZING, and then never read Dean/Castiel again.

Which kind of ties in to the fact that Dean!girls who ship Sam/Dean have to like Sam to a certain extent, whereas Dean/Castiel shippers don't necessarily have any ties to Sam at all (I know a lot of them do like Sam, it just that. IDK. There is room for Dean/Castiel shippers not to?). Again, I recognise that this is generalizing and also illogical, but when I'm scrolling through ihearttvshows and I see someone's Supernatural post with this written in it:
Cast:
Jared Padalecki ... Sam Winchester
Jensen Ackles ... Dean Winchester ♥
Jim Beaver ... Bobby Singer ♥
Misha Collins ... Castiel ♥ ♥ ♥
As a Sam!girl, that puts me on the defensive, a little (Obvs I am making an assumption that that person ships Dean/Castiel, they might not do, but I think it is likely). Why doesn't Sam get a heart? ;___;

I think if the show has Castiel and Sam's relationship being more significant, I'd feel less like that. As it is, though, the show is kind of split into Sam-Dean time and Dean-Castiel time (admittedly that is a lot less time, but) which I feel sort of sets them up against each other. If Castiel's time was less Dean-Castiel focussed and more balanced in a Sam-Castiel-Dean way, it would feel less like the Dean & Castiel Show was trying to compete with the Sam & Dean Show, and more like it was the Sam & Dean & Castiel Show.

I did actually try to read Dean/Castiel one more time after I QUIT FOREVVEEEER, because a writer I liked from SGA fandom started writing it, and I figured I should give it a chance, but Sam was so very 'somewhere off in the background *handwave*' that I quit reading halfway through. Even if Dean's love of Sam is given lip service, I'm not particularly interested in fic where Sam is just conveniently absent the whole time.

It's not so much the fact that the ship is out there (I even ship it a little myself, hahahaha oops), but that I periodically worry about it becoming canon. That would sadden me. Heh, it's very difficult not to get ridiculous about one's ships. Shipping comes with an implied emotional investment. :P

Yep. No need to explain this, it's pretty typical.

Which I found UTTERLY TRAUMATIZING, and then never read Dean/Castiel again.

Hahaha aw <3 Yeah, honestly? Most Dean/Cas writers that I've seen care about Sam (there's one obvious exception, some bitch who posts every single fic with the disclaimer "If I owned it, Sam would have stayed dead" and we're all like IDIOT, ARE YOU FOR REAL?), but he's often absent, either because Dean and Castiel need to be alone in order to fuck or because the story is focusing on the development of that relationship, and giving Sam equal time would just distract from the point.

Making it the Sam & Dean & Castiel show would be healthy for the entire fandom. -_-

Thanks for explaining! Your thought process seems pretty typical (but not in the "oh this is so typical of them" way, don't worry XD) and understandable to me.
