We went and saw a very interesting documentary called Borat last night. It definitely helped me learn a lot more about that part of the world - who knew that Kazakstan produced the highest-quality potassium in all of Central Asia?
I have also recently developed a love of index cards. When I started prepping for my novel this year, I wrote these brief character sketches on index cards (1 card per character), so that I could handily always have them with me, and could look up relevant details on the characters as I went through the story. It's made the writing process MUCH easier, and I'm going to definitely keep doing it. I think with the next project I'm going to plot the same way - dedicate 1 card to each chapter, and write down everything I want to happen in that chapter before I start writing it. I figure it's got to beat carrying arround a whole mess of notebooks everywhere I go.
Apparently Nabokov wrote all of Lolita on index cards, so that he could write scenes out of order, and focus on the parts that he wanted to get done first, without having to go back and re-write the whole story. Genius!
