New Writing Project

I've been thinking of starting up a new chain story project. Basically, with a chain story, one person starts the story, then someone else continues it, and then a third person writes another part, etc. They're really interesting projects, as you get a wide variety of writing styles and plot twists involved in the one big story. If you went to camp as a child, or ever took a creative writing class, you've probably taken part in one of these. Even if you're someone who doesn't normally consider themselves "creative", it's a good way to get your creative juices flowing and give your artistic side an opportunity to flourish.

The actual story won't start for a little while yet; between NaNoWriMo in November, and the holiday season in December, it would probably be best to wait until January to start this. However, between now and then, I would like to sort out some of the logistics of the whole thing, so that it runs as smoothly as possible.

Stuff I Need To Know For Now:

1a) Would you be interested in taking part in a chain story project? I'm anticipating that the time commitment involved would be no more than a few hours each month.
1b) Do you know anyone else that would be interested in taking part in a project like this? If so, please get them to get in touch with me at ryanharron@gmail.com.

Now, assuming that you are, at this point, interested in taking part,

2) What do you think would be a good format for this? I'm currently torn between the simplicity of e-mail and the accessability of a website (probably something through Blogger or Livejournal).

3) How often should updates go out? I was thinking that each writer be given a 72-hour (three day) "window" to write each chapter, as that would keep things constantly moving and fresh. However, at the same time, I'm afraid that that would potentially limit who would be able to take part. Would something more open-ended be a better idea?

4) How long should each installment of the story be? I definitely wouldn't want to be a stickler as far as word counts are concerned, but was thinking of a recommendation of 250-500 words per story part. For that matter, though, should the story be limited to only prose writing, or should other forms of artistic expression (poetry, music, cartooning, etc) be included as part of the larger story mosaic?

Let me know what you think, people - together, I think we can create something awesome with this!
