Nickelodeon so far is AMAZING!
Everything there is sooo nice. It's absolutely beautiful inside, and there's candy around literally every corner. Buckets of it that they just expect you to take if you want. They have everything--butter fingers, suckers, gum, snickers, tootsie rolls. Every am they have free, fresh bagels, muffins, and cookies. Everyone says you'll gain 15-20 lbs if you're not careful.
I have my own work station (they're kinda like cubicals but don't feel like it at all, since the designs really different...they feel more like seperatations), and my own computer with scanner. It's going to be my job to scan things (mostly storyboards) if they give it to me, but their idea of "work" is setting the computer to do something, going down to the kitchen and talking around the water cooler, then checking back until it's finished. There was big talk of a big production meeting happening at 5pm yesterday. At 5, everyone went to the main conference room, and instead of a meeting...they had champagne, ice cream, and BIG strawberries to reward everyone because they were all working so hard! It was amazing, and felt like Christmas.
They do actually work there, too. I really like the crew I'm working with a lot, and Nai-Hao, Kai-lan is so friggen cute! Some of the jobs are so intricate & intense (like the animation editor), I don't know how the people do it. He literally sits there all day and phonetically transcribes every single word, every single sentence that's in the script. Then they go in and match up the phonetic transcriptions to the movement of the characters frame by frame (there's 16 frames in a second).
Everyone there is soooo amazing nice! They're big on hiring interns, too. 6 past interns (from the past 2 years) are working on the project I'm working on. They're all younger, except for the execs who are older. So welcoming. I was standing around everyone with the ice cream and Mac, my boss, is like "Go on, Katie--go get a drink!". Then afterwards I went to help clean up the ice cream that was sitting out and help put it back in the kitchen and the girls said "Don't worry about it! You're our intern, not our janitor!".
Oh yeah, they also have a fully stocked kitchen w/expresso machine, and a big comfy area you can lounge around. It's across from the gym, where you can play basketball. You can go to the other building if you want to play ping pong or fooseball.
They have a lot of extra classes you can go to if you want. They're all free but some you bring your own supplies, so I'm going to at least a few of them. They have jewlry making, intro to animation, resume writing, speak italian, mosiac making, drawing (def going to do that one...I wanted to develop my artistic abilities), networking. The sweetest part about it is that they are run by high people that know their shit...like the drawing for fun one is by the exectutive animation producer of "Dora The Explorer". Plus it's a great way to meet people and hang around them more...which I want to do because they're seriously wayyy cool.
Next Friday from 10-12 we're having a potluck w/"Go Diego, Go!". We're supposed to bring something to eat and an item for show and tell. Then we're actually showing and telling, like in PreSchool (this is Nickelodeon). I dont know what I'll bring. Hmmmm.
I'm only working 20 hrs a week for my 8 credit hours (though I'm sure I'll be there extra, hanging around and the classes and stuff), so it will go week by week...3 days a week for 8 hrs. They're super flexible about it, and said I can come in M/T/W, or W/T/F....or whatever I want as long as I get my hours. There is some stuff Mac wants me to be around for though, like sit in on 2 recording sessions. This week I'm M/W/F (which is good because I can take my mom to her flight on Thurs afternoon, and have all day to spend with her today).
We also can take our friends and family in almost any time to tour the studio. I'm taking my mom there today.
Gotta go!
