On the Presidency

During the Presidential campaign I went to the store looking for a Halloween card for a friend of mine and came upon one that had a picture of a person opening the paper, with the headline clearly reading "Obama Wins!" Inside, it said "Sorry, this was the scariest card I could find. Happy Halloween ( Read more... )

This is probably the only comment from a Republican that I've heard in the past few days that is respectful, and I respect that. I don't think I'm alone when I say that I don't consider "experience" to be as important as a fresh perspective, an open mind, and natural intelligence. However, I do understand your fears, but I think a lot of people are forgetting how little power the president has in the scheme of things. He's not going to be able to snap his fingers and indulge in every whim. I'm thrilled that Obama won, but I'm definitely more eager to see how America's next four years go.

The only thing I disagree with about your entry is your remark about Bush-haters. I personally don't think he has done anything to earn my respect. I do believe in respecting everyone, and I used to have respect for him intitially, but he has lost every scrap of it. I find nearly everything he has ever said, felt, and done repulsive. And I think it's totally American to exercise my right to dislike my leader so strongly.

I understand what you're saying, and it is your right. Freedom of Speech is one of the greatest things we have, however, I still personally find it unattractive to be completely ripping your own front-man. I agree that it's right to voice your disapproval of a leader--especially when you feel so strongly about it--but when the threshold of that criticism's maximized it gets to a point where it's less about the thing someone's disapproving of and more about entertainment ( ... )

In short, I also understand what you're saying. It's much more productive to discuss the reasons why Bush sucks instead of just spouting off that he sucks. I think a lot of people have hated him so much over the past several years that they've forgotten their reasons. It reminds me of why I hate sports sometimes. I love Cleveland sports, but going to games and hearing some of the AWFUL things people say makes me really ashamed to be a Browns or Indians fan. I know it's definitely not the same, but it's what I'm thinking about right now. Ha.
