"The Celts would obviously have been active in the northeast part of 'Vinland,' and indeed Fell claimed to have found many Celtic-ogham inscriptions in New England.  The oral tradition I mentioned comes from an Indian in Wisconsin (whither many New England natives were 'removed' by the U.S. Government), who states that the Wampanoag of coastal Massachusetts had been visited, long before the Pilgrims arrived, by Celtic monks, and had adopted certain ideas from them.  Several close variants of this tale, but with no specific mention of pre-Columbian Celts, can be found in the superb Spirit of the New England Tribes (Simmons 1986), a study of Indian history and folklore from 1620 to 1984."
