And then, the story got ugly and weird...
What began as a story about some ethically-challenged Canadians who found a camera a woman lost in Hawaii, and then decided not to return it because their nine year old son liked it
http://www.boingboing.net/2006/02/18/bad_samaritan_family.html has recently gotten a great deal stranger, funnier, and more suspicious.
http://www.boingboing.net/2006/02/20/mysterious_lawer_thr.html This has really caught the attention of the blogosphere, and since I last checked the story (at about 2 o'clock this morning) the number of blog references has quadrupled. If you follow the links above, and the links from the links---especially the link to Judith's blog, where you will get the original story---you will begin to see how this story has continued to develop, and get uglier the further it goes. I disagree with those who suggest (sometimes quite vociferously) that Judith should post the names, address, and phone number of these folks---I think that would be sinking to their level of ethical questionableness. I do, however, believe that she should use every legal means at her disposal, including contacting an attorney (a real attorney, not a "lawer," as the spelling- and grammar-challenged Canadian fellow kept saying), contacting law enforcement here in the US and in Canada, and trying to make use of the media to get the story out.
I'd like to see this story get more attention, quite frankly, because this behavior is reprehensible. Worse still is the fact that they are teaching a nine year old child that he does not have to respect other people and their property. Give the woman her camera back. It's that simple.
