So, I had on the Game Show Network the other day. (I was taping something for my mom because her cable was out and it was gonna be a couple days till they'd get a guy out to her house, and she didn't want to miss her shows. Really. I certainly don't watch cheesy game shows hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro. Seriously. I don't. Oh, hush up.) And! On ( Read more... )

It's one of the worst double standards in fandom. Personally, I like the three genre designations: Gen; Slash; Het. It's so easy to do and shows proper respect to all folks in fandom to use them, regardless of your own fic views. It's as simple as that.

It is indeed and for some reason it is also a blind spot for many people too. They just don't seem to get why it's wrong. And then there are those who have the view that one simple 'they were lovers' reference does not make a story slash or het but gen so it's okay to label it gen, and don't seem to understand that whilst they might think that other folk would be furious if they read a gen story where the men were referred to as lovers. Argh. It's one of my 'soap box' subjects. I too like the three genres and use them as you say it's respectful to everyone.

We're fewer in number, methinks, but we're here!

I know quite a few cold weather besties, but yes, I think we are outnumbered. I saw a comment today on another friend's LJ about 'spring will soon be here' and I'm thinking, no, no, let's have winter first.

Oh, I'm indeed enjoying them. The little girl is a bit of a terror, still being something of a kitten, but she's so sweet and affectionate. She had no problems settling in. My boy, not surprisingly, was more wary, but he's getting more comfortable and shows no interest in going back to being an outside kitty, which was a bit of a worry. So, relief there!

*Smiles* They both sound adorable. The cats Mother had when I was growing up were all born in farm barns and yet like your little boy showed no sign of wanting to go back to life outside. I think they know when they are well off.

Yes, it's made things easier for my mom,

Which at times like this is always good.

What gets me is when slashers do it, because we're the ones who are the "victims," as it were, of the double standard and should know better. But, seriously, I don't know how many slash fics I've read where the author had another slash pairing, or more, in a fic and only listed the main one. (They're all slash, after all, so what does it matter? Urgh. Well, y'know, I don't read or even want to read all slash pairings, purely by virute of their being slash. Urgh, again.) It happens in SG-1 a lot. Then, we won't even discuss the number of MFU slash fics that include Het, unwarned!

Argh, I hate that kind of stuff! There's just this sense of entitlement on some folks' parts that it's okay to knock winter, even natural, because who likes winter anyway?? Talk about blindspots. There's a local restaurant I go to sometimes that has a sign up by their cash register, come winter, that says "X Number of Days Till Spring!" Like we're all just waiting breathlessly. I'm tempted to take in a sign, come spring, syaing "X Number of Days Till Fall!" and slap it up. ;-)

I think they know when they are well off.

I hope so. :-)

Oh, yes. It also irks me when slash writers 'warn' for slash, not label under 'genre' but 'warn' in the way they 'warn' for death or heavy BDSM. It drives me mad - what does it say when a slash writer warns for what they are writing? Label it of course, but don't warn.

*Nods* Oh yes. I also have to say I hate the 'surprise pairing' label. Unless I know the writer and know they only write the pairing I read I pass straight by 'surprise pairing'. Okay that might mean I'll miss a story of my pairing, but I'm not going to risk reading about my OTP with someone else.

Exactly! In fact my mother did it when we were on the phone - I told her 'off' nicely and with a jokey tone, but really :-) Her justification is she loves to garden and can't really do that in the snow and frost, but even so . . .

I'm tempted to take in a sign, come spring, syaing "X Number of Days Till Fall!" and slap it up. ;-)

*Chuckles maldy* Wonderful idea.

::nods:: Just like when they rate it NC-17, just because it's slash and regardless of its actual content. Very irksome and troubling when even some slash writers feel slash requires "special handling." ::sigh::

I will, too, unless and until I know who the pairing is. I think most readers bring different needs and expectations to fanfic than they do to mainstream, driven by more specific desires for particular fandoms, pairings, and characters, and for the buttons they like pushed there. I know I do. It's why the "Read it, you might like it!" argument or the pimping folks try for fandoms, pairings, characters I don't read doesn't work with me. I just don't approach fanfic like I do mainstream literature.

So many people who don't like winter just don't get how much of a downer it is to always be hearing that, not to mention the expectation that you'll agree with them! That's what gets me the most. I mean, I don't like summer at all, but I don't expect everyone I encounter to just automatically be in agreement with me.

*Chuckles maldy* Wonderful idea.

Something tells me it might not go over too well. I'm not that good a customer there. ; )

This could be me saying the above - because this is *exactly* how I feel about fanfic and mainstream fic - exactly! I'm so glad to hear someone else feels the same way as I do.

Sounds like we're members of the same choir. ::g:: I suspect we're in the majority on this one when it comes to fanfic. True, I know a few folks who are constantly on the lookout for new pairings, new fandoms - folks I call the fandom flibbertigibbets - but they seem to be the minority. It's nice to be in the majority for once. :-)

We are indeed in the same choir - which is so good to know :-)

I think you're right, we are in the majority as well re: fanfic. It is indeed nice.
