Snowflake Challenge #7: fandom resources/spaces/communities

Jan 20, 2022 21:38

In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy.

1. Hey, so I hear the Three Sentence Ficathon is well underway. :) Always a fun time.

2. Buffy folks, have you noticed that buffyclips website yet? It hosts, as the creator says on tumblr, "individual scenes from specific relationships, episodes, seasons, characters, etc. that anyone can use in video edits/anything you want" (so far, they're from season 1). I'm intrigued. Seems like it could be helpful for vidding and giffing and such. Maybe even for something like a very focused rewatch of a certain character's or ship's scenes around a certain point in canon.

3. This is not a fandom-specific resource, but have I mentioned how much I love using Reddit for writing research? It's one of the great joys of life (except that time when I looked at an incel subreddit to understand Warren Mears), and I can think of at least a couple of times I've received compliments on the details or realism of my writing based on something I researched on Reddit. Subreddits of countries and professions can be very nice for this. There was that great thread about what gender dysphoria feels like, which I used in one of my Spike genderbends. But AMA (Ask Me Anything) posts are my very favorite for trying to understand aspects of characters - learning about what it's like to belong to certain groups of people (mostly I use it to research professions). Obviously, anything I learn in this way is anecdotal info at best, and I don't think it can replace a sensitivity reader for trickier subjects. But Reddit can be a fun and helpful first step when I'm looking more for subjective experiences than for hard facts. I love doing a web search for "[my fic research interest of the month] Reddit AMA" and seeing that yes, yes there are such posts to dive into. :)
