Another night, another incredible, sold-out Dusty Flowerpot show. Have I mentioned just how lucky I am? It is such a thrill to be able to be even a small part of what is happening in the Russian Hall four nights a week. Tonight's audience seemed to be especially raucous, which just adds to the overall atmosphere. While it's great to be a part of the show, I do wish that I could be down in the crowd at least once to see it from their perspective; there are so many moments that I simply cannot see, either because we're playing or because we're behind a curtain/dropsheet/prop.
Hearing the thunderous applause the end of the show, and seeing so many people in the audience dressing up and hanging around afterwards to enjoy the music and mingle with the cast and crew is so rewarding. I am finding that I love having that interaction with the crowd: it feels more like they are with us, instead of just sitting there, clapping politely and then going home to forget what happened. Does this sort of thing happen at other "professional" shows?
And now I am back in my new home on the Drive, with a view of the lights from the North Shore and Grouse Mountain, and Beethoven playing in the background, thanks to iTunes. Tomorrow I get to do this all over again, and then afterwards dash off to the WISE Hall to play with
Orkestar Slivovica,
Geoff Berner (whom I have been told is an absolute riot) and
Joanna Chapman-Smith. Again, lucky.
