It's just a Phase they're going through ... right?

Customer:  Excuse me, what's this music that you're playing?

Me:  It's Steve Reich.

Customer:  Oh.  Will it be over soon?

No, I didn't kill our customer.  Instead, I explained to her what was going on in the music (called 'Piano Phase'), as well as a very brief overview of Minimalist music and a few of its composers - Reich, Riley, Glass.  She seemed to appreciate the music more, having some information in which to place the music into context, but seriously:  it was a piece of music for piano, written in 1967.  Forty-three years ago!  You'd think that this would be enough time for people to assimilate this kind of music into their collective consciousness, wouldn't you?

Right now, I'm playing Mahler's Fifth Symphony, Leonard Bernstein conducting (the only way to go, as far as I'm concerned), just to help purge the memory from my brain.  Tomorrow, it's Philip Glass.  All freaking day.  Fear me and my appreciation for cutting edge music from the Sixties!
