Watch Me Bleed
For some, music is not just a pastime,
It's an undeniable fact of living,
Watch Me Bleed
For some, music is not just a pastime,
It's an undeniable fact of living,
A blissful slaver of mind, body and soul.
To rise above the ashes of mediocrity is rare,
Yet the gift of song is freely handed out to anyone who cares to receive it,
Instantly shattering our daily drudgery.
The path to pursue more than the usual,
More than what is safe and known,
Is wrought with time-sharpened jagged blades that cut deep,
Blocking many from the road to something greater,
Beyond the stunted imagination of their peers.
Within the veins of the few,
Passion fills every sinew with a sweet unquenchable purpose,
Calming the fear of those treacherous paths.
Though each slice burns and bleeds,
Still they take each cut
And wear the scars with pride to signal their choice,
That undying pursuit of greater joy within every chord.
And so they say - Watch Me Bleed!

When people find out what my favorite music group is, I get a lot of different reactions. Usually, it's along the lines of, "I used to listen to them when I was a kid... are they still around?" Sometimes a person's reply is more negative and they proceed to tell me how they found their music a little annoying. Other times I run into people who absolutely hated them. There is one thing that I find in common among everyone I reveal this fact to... every single person has heard of them.
The poem that I opened this post with, "Watch Me Bleed," is included in a special edition CD/DVD combo that this group I speak of put out back in 2005. While this isn't their most recent release, I thought that this set of lines was an appropriate addition to my profile here. My reasoning in this is my complete identification with the words. Music is about passion, sacrifice, and is an addiction that I hope I never shake. Every time I try to put into words just how deeply connected to music that I am, I fail.
After I am asked what my favorite music group is, the inevitable question that follows is, "Why?" Most people think that I like the way they look or that I just never out grew them or their music. The reasons that I remain a faithful fan to this band, that has been making music for a decade, are many and varied. They are talented, passionate, giving, and committed people, who pour their hearts into every single note that they write, play or sing. These are their most obvious qualities, but "Watch Me Bleed" is a perfect, compelling rendering of my own feelings about the hold that music has over me. I couldn't have said it better and for this I love them even more.
After reading all of this, if you're still with me, you've got to be wondering who I could be talking about. At least, you are if you haven't known me closely for very long. Who could have written these words that can keep this crazy girl awake to write a blog on it?
Those insanely perfect words that inspire me so greatly were written by one or more of the three men that make up the group Hanson.
Are you surprised? I wasn't.
