You are turned into a child/teenager for a day. What do you do with the time?
"What the hell are you guys looking at?"
It wasn't all that uncommon to hear that sentence coming out of Katie Ryan's mouth. It was, however, uncommon to hear it uttered from the mouth of a sixteen-year-old girl in Diesel jeans and an
incredibly irreverent T-shirt. Maybe she hadn't looked in the mirror and didn't understand why everyone was staring at her; or maybe she had and just didn't care. With Katie, it could go either way.
"Katie," Mack said slowly, unable to keep from getting that slightly paternal tone to his voice like he did to his daughters. "Have you seen yourself today?"
"Yes, I did actually look in the mirror this morning." She snorted a little. "And there's nothing I can do about it, so let's just shut up about it and get to work." Never mind that she now had to crane her neck a little to be able to look Mack in the eye as she moved to grab a file off her desk.
"What actually happened?" Brian asked, as the two men followed her out of her office and back into the main area of the TOC.
"I have no idea. I thought I'd go see Hector as soon as we get things under control here," she said with a shrug. So maybe she was younger, shorter, and her voice was a bit higher-pitched, but Katie's mind was still the same, and there were still responsibilities. To her this had no bearing on her professional duties as Executive Officer of the Unit. "I went home, I had a few drinks, I went to bed early and here we are. Where are we on Siam?"
Brian handed her a file. "What's Tom say about this?"
"About what?"
"About waking up in bed with a sixteen-year-old," Mack retorted.
"You'd have to ask him. He's still sleeping," she replied. She had been trying to get her husband to take things easier which meant sometimes letting him sleep in, while she went to work. She'd squirmed out of bed and left him a note, not to mention breakfast. Though...She smirked. "Though I suppose he'd probably like it. Now can we please get to work?"
