The only thing Jack Mcphee saw when he got out on the beach was the bright blue uniform shirt of the Sheriff, brooding on the sand. Jack walked carefully along the sand, wondering what he could say to make things better between them. Jack couldn’t believe he had yelled at Doug over something completely petty. He had just been so frustrated with Doug lately. Something seemed to be troubling him, and though they had been dating a year, Doug was still keeping things from him.
Doug was so absorbed in his thoughts that he didn’t even hear Jack come up behind him, and sit down next to him.
“Are you okay?”
Doug turned with a blink. He sighed exhaustively, a million thoughts flying through his head. He wasn’t sure what he could tell Jack. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust him, it was just Jack had been so happy lately, and he didn’t want Jack to lose the happiness because he was worrying about him. “I don’t know.”
Jack took Doug’s hand, holding it close to his heart. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Doug moved his head where it was on Jack’s chest, right beside where Jack had set his hand.
Jack stroked Doug’s brown hair, dropping his hand, and wrapping his arms around the Sheriff. “You don’t have to talk if you don’t want, but something is troubling you, and you suffering in silence just makes me worry more, darling.” He kissed Doug’s hair, while one of his hands gave Doug a light neck rub.
Doug sighed again, tilting his head up to look at Jack. “I’m sorry I’ve been moody. A lot has been going on, and I just didn’t want to stress you out. You had such a hard school year, and it seemed like after you came back from New York visiting Jen and Grams that all your stress was gone. I didn’t want to ruin…”
Jack stopped him with a soft kiss on the lips. He stroked Doug’s back, and pulled the older man closer towards him. Jack felt like kicking himself for letting the moodiness of Doug go on so long. Pacey had told him that it would blow over, but Jack was starting to realize that Doug probably hadn’t told Pacey what was going on either. “That’s a silly reason not to tell me, plus whatever it is you can tell me, or someone, since apparently you have been keeping things bottled up again. That’s not healthy Doug.” Jack made sure his voice was playful yet serious so Doug wouldn’t take it the wrong way. “Don’t be silly, Dougie, I want to be part of your life good or bad.”
Doug turned his head down, looking at the sand. “A lot happened while you were away,” His voice was very quiet, and Doug felt ashamed that he couldn’t discuss things with Jack. He had never met someone before who he fully trusted so much, someone who gave him butterflies, but also accepted him fully for every single thing he was. And while Jack was gone that week, Doug had easily slipped into the pattern of hiding his pain from the world, and the old insecurities that told him no one cared for his problems.
“What happened?” Jack kissed Doug’s hair again.
“Two weeks ago, I found I was being sued by one of Capeside’s former mechanics. He claimed I used my badge to solicit sexual favors or something like that. So spurned by this, the city council have scheduled or a recall election, or are going to. They haven’t released it to the public, but two other people have thrown in their hats for when it does happen.”
Jack didn’t say anything for a few seconds, because he felt Doug starting to cry. He wrapped his arms tight around Doug, trying to think of what he should say. The only thing he could think to do was curse himself mentally for not asking on Monday when he came home why Doug seemed so upset over everything. Doug had tried to do nothing but good for Capeside, he didn’t deserve this treatment. What kind of cruel person would try to destroy everything a man worked to build up? Jack couldn’t bear to think of such a thing, he wished that it could just be a nightmare for Doug’s sake, but knew it wasn’t. Something crossed Jack’s mind. “It’s Rupert, isn’t it?”
Doug nodded, not looking up. Nate Rupert had gone to high school with Doug, Nate had also been a volunteer for the police department, and for a long time they were occasional undercover lovers. Nate always seemed to start and end the relationship with Doug around whether or not he was going out with his boyfriend Blake. Nate had been the one who controlled almost every aspect of the relationship, and the last fight they had had two years ago had dissolved any chance of a relationship let alone a friendship. Doug had told Nate he couldn’t take the roller coaster ride anymore, especially since Doug at the time wasn’t fully out of the closet, or ready to be.
Last year, Nate had moved to a neighboring town with Blake. Three weeks ago, before Jack had gone to New York, Nate had come to the house mainly to have sex with Doug, and the anger in Doug’s voice as he yelled at Nate had resonated with Jack for days. Doug had told Nate that he couldn’t because he was in a public and monogamous relationship with Jack. Jack had just assumed it would be the end of it, especially considering Nate had made Doug loss all his temper, and had almost physically attacked him.
“My poor baby.” Jack mumbled softly, there had to be something Jack could do about this mess. Jack felt stupid now for going to New York, but he hadn’t known he was needed here. “I’m so sorry.” He whispered, not sure if it would help Doug any.
“It’s not your fault, it’s my own stupidity.” Doug soft cries turned to heavy sobs.
“No, it’s not.” Jack rubbed Doug’s back. “Please don’t blame yourself, sweetheart. It is not in anyway your fault; I know I can’t convince you otherwise. But it’s not your fault. You did nothing wrong. Nothing. “Jack felt his voice straining as he tried not to cry himself. Jack knew that Nate must have known how this would affect Doug.
Jack felt the sand shifting and looked up; Pacey was coming towards where they both were at a steady fast. He was wearing a Hawaiian shirt with stains from the restaurant, and had a serious expression on his face. He sat down on the other side of Doug.
Pacey pulled out a newspaper from his back pocket, and threw it on the sand in disgust. “I’m sorry I didn’t realize what was going on before. If I had I would have killed that punk ass myself.” He rubbed Doug’s back, his teeth gritted
Jack glanced over at the headline, “Questions of Abuse of Power, leads to recall election.” He didn’t even bother to read the article. He held Doug close to him tighter.
Pacey was still grumbling, knowing from Doug’s sobs that he couldn’t speak. And Pacey wanted to get the frustrations out for both of them. “No body does that to my older brother and gets away with it. We will make sure this asshole pays.”
Doug took a long time before he could compose himself to even pull himself away from Jack, but he managed to. He mumbled a “Thank you,” giving Pacey a weak hug not having much energy for much else. A fit of sobs hit him, and he couldn’t stop it.
Jack grabbed him, pulling him closer.
And both Jack and Pacey silently vowed they would do everything in their power to hurt Nate Rupert for hurting Dougie like this.
