Bailey was a bit nervous; he couldn’t believe his two wonderful daughters would try to make sure that he had a date for Valentine’s Day. He hated blind dates, but he figured their hearts were in the right place, even if they had posted a personal ad on a dating site without telling him beforehand.
They had set him up with an older woman than he usually went out with, but she seemed nice enough from the post she had put up, and from her picture. She reminded Bailey a little bit of one of those forties’s starlets. And even if the night turned out to be a waste, it would be a night away from work.
Bailey checked his coat and hat at the front of the restaurant. To the table with him, he carried the bouquet of long stem red roses, which the girls had insisted he bring. He only had a minute to wait, barely able to order his scotch, when the charming vision of date dressed in a white fur coat came in the front door. He stood as she checked her coat. She was a vision even without the coat, with her blond hair pulled back in a smart bun, and wearing an elegant red evening gown, accented with a silver pendant around her neck.
The Maitre’d pulled out her chair, and she sat down.
Bailey handed her the bouquet as he sat back down. “You are even lovelier than your photo, Miriam.”
She blushed a little, and flashed him an almost childlike smile. “Thank you, Bailey.” She sniffed the flowers. “And such wonderful roses, my son grows roses, and I have always thought they were lovely.”
