Nathan Brubaker sat doing a crossword puzzle; his feet perched cautiously on the coffee table in front of him. He was waiting for his wife to criticize him like she used to do about damaging the furniture, but he figured that it would turn like it had been lately, with her not even paying attention to what he was doing. He could be having sex with another woman in the chair, and she wouldn’t even look up from his files.
Michelle was curled in the blue recliner not more than 20 feet away. She had stacks of files all around her chair, and a thick file and a legal pad in her lap. She hadn’t said a word to him in the 2 days since they had left the VCTF.
They had been locked at his work place when the Jack of All Trades killer had decided to turn his attention from Nathan’s coworker, Samantha Waters, to the members of the team and their families. Dr. Grace Alverez’s husband, Morgan, had almost been killed.
Nathan knew Michelle was pissed about the inconvience. She was working a big, high profile case, and to have people escort her to and from where ever she needed to go was the worst kind of constriction in her mind. Nathan had a feeling that having to be locked down was probably the top of a long list that she was composing in her head to sling at him during their divorce hearing.
Michelle hadn’t filled the papers yet as far as Nathan knew, but their marriage had been falling apart for a long time, and he was just waiting for the day he saw the paper processor waiting to serve him.
