My new job at Cannonsburg is pretty cool. In the past three days I've worked 30.5 hours. One morning shift and two doubles. For the difficulty of the work I do $6 an hour isn't too bad at all. If I work the morning shift I work 9:30am - 3pm on weekdays, but if I work a double, which is what I did on Sat and Sun I work from 8:30am to 10pm. My day consists of working the bottom of a lift for 30 mins, slowing the chairs so people can get on them, then I ride up the lift to the top shack and watch people get off them safely. The ride up is the highlight of my day, although getting off the lift without skis is difficult. Nothing ever happens up there so I just sit in the shack and try not to fall asleep, which is easy in the morning but by 6pm it gets kinda tricky. Then after 30 mins in the shack I go on a 30 min break. Which is ridiculous because sitting in the shack is a break in itself. After break I go back to helping people onto the lift and the cycle continues. All day. Unless the bossman decides I'm a tired little girl by second shift and puts me in solitary confinement in a shack to watch the ropes that people hold onto to get up the small hills. This job has a different rotation, an hour and 45 mins in the shack and then a 30 mins break. The hour and 45 mins usually turns into 2-3 hours because the relief girl is always late. This job is so freaking boring that I struggle not to nod out, I lose this struggle often. The bossman seems to think that since I'm a girl I have my girlie thoughts to occupy me, like boys and hair and blahblahblah. I don't. I need physical action to keep me up. I think I'm going to bring my electronic Yahtzee. It's not a very active thing to do but its something. Also, because I'm a girl, he won't put me on Quad. Its the lift with the biggest chairs and it's the most work, but I know I could do it better that the older guys that have worked there for so long, because they're backs are all achy and they get worn out fast. I think I'm gonna ask him to put me on it every day until he does, and then I can prove myself. I shouldn't have to prove myself, but I will if I have to.
I can't really complain about sitting on my ass for hours doing nothing and getting paid for it but its surprising how much work it is to stay awake.
I never thought I would be working a job that starts before 10am or working outside in the fucking cold. Those two things are what I hate most in life, but this is by far my favorite job yet. My co-workers are awesome. They're all potheads who get high while sitting in the shacks. Plus I get a free ski pass for the whole season. I don't know how to ski or snowboard but I think now that I can learn for free I'm going to take it up. Probably snowboarding, it looks easier and more fun.
Alright. Time for bed.
