Movies

21. Hysteria (November 6) - 4 stars

A romcom centered around the invention of the vibrator? Genius! :D Like seriously, excellent idea. I picked it up because it looked like it was going to be hilarious, I was pleased to find it was and even more pleased to find it full of feminism. It starts out laughing at the amazing ineptness of the late 19th century medical industry and then proceeds to be like 'no but seriously though, the social and political conditions for women were awful and hysteria was used as a catch all diagnosis to invalidate women attempting to fight against the system in any manner but it's cool, Maggie Gyllenhaal is in it to win it, vibrators are awesome, and she and Hugh Dancy kiss!' So basically the best rom com I've seen this year. :D 4 stars

22. The Hunger Games (November 12) -- 3.5 stars

Sooo it turns out I'm still mad about the whitewashing in this movie? Like it took me half the film to quiet down the voice in my head shrieking about the missed opportunity for Hollywood to make a blockbuster film about a brown girl and the incredible whiteness of District 12 and I hate whitewashing!!!!!!!!!! :< Stupid Hollywood. I love Jennifer Lawrence, why did you have to spoil things by making me watch her in a movie and not be overjoyed to see her.

ANYWAYS. Alongside that frustration I did find some of the book-to-movie changes interesting; widening the scope of the film to see the gamemaker politics and the game's impact seemed like a good move to me: since the movie by its very format wasn't going to be able to accomplish the tight Katniss POV of the book, they might as well get the important set up done. I'm iffy on the decision to have Katniss covering Rue in flowers spark a riot in District 11, on the one hand, good way to set hints of the rebellion, on the other hand I loved that moment of solidarity in the book when they sent her bread. :( Plus I do think in the context of the story it was a politically radical move, the point of the games is to divide the districts, not bring them together. One of the points anyways. So yeah, idk if that was the greatest choice. I also would've liked more time spent on Katniss and Rue because while Amandla Stenberg is an adorable tiny angel who grabbed my heartstrings from the moment she showed, she and Katniss had less than 10 minutes together all told. For a relationship that important, they should have spent more time developing it. :l The movie made some weird choices where to spend it's time in general, it took over an hour to get the games actually started.

(speaking of weird choices, repeatedly cutting to Gale when Katniss acted out her love story with Peeta. Seriously? Stop trying to make the love triangle happen, it just isn't going to happen! I really hope we weren't meant to feel sad for him or anything because the girl is trying to survive here, set your narrative priorities straight)

Cinna was amazing and I am going to start marshalling all my Cinna-lives fic now to prepare for upcoming emotional devastation in Catching Fire. I was able to resign myself to the Peeta and Gale casting as the movie progressed though I still don't see any way the two actors can remotely plausibly read as teenagers. C'est la vie! Also I wished the Peeta actor had played him a little more cunning, like that boy becomes the voice of the revolution because of his political savvy. I understand it's tricky to play someone who's both sincere and acting to capitalize on that sincerity for most of the film but if Jennifer Lawrence could convey Katniss' mixed emotions idk why he couldn't. But maybe he'll wow me in Catching Fire, who knows. All told I'm giving this 3.5 stars.
