Media - February 2012

Feb 29, 2012 12:14

So when I said last month these media posts would at least guarantee me one post a month I was kind of secretly hoping I'd develop time management skills and manage to post other things anyways. That didn't really happen. >_> Low expectations are the way to go here I see.

Movies

3. The Warrior's Way (February 5) - 2.5 stars

This movie was kind enough to provide its own review.

Me too Jang Dong Gun. Me too.

4. Captain America (February 6) - 3.5 stars

Quibbles first: needed more ladies. Peggy Sue was great, I'll keep her, but one is not enough. Thor did it better there. Now moving on to joy!

Jim Morita and Gabe Jones lived! \o/ I fell in love with Jim with his first line ('I'm from Fresno, Ace', okay so did you know I adore you Fresno guy? ~I just want you to know~) and had a similar explosion of feelings when Jones revealed he knew German. *___* You don't even know how worried I was they were going to die. I guess Bucky fulfilled the film makers need for WWII tragic deaths though. HE DIED TO SAVE THEM ALL.

I liked the movie! Which was surprising because US style patriotism is not exactly one of my favourite themes and well, this is a movie called Captain America. He came off as a decent guy though. I really wish I could've seen what sort of film this would have been if it was set during a more controversial war like Vietnam or Afghanistan. Would Captain America be a protester? I think he might, he did say he didn't like bullies and those are some pretty clear cut examples of America being one. Don't have too many other feelings, the movie was competent and entertaining and I'm not sorry I spent two hours on it. I hope The Avengers can manage the same.

5. Super 8 (February 20) - 3 stars

You know what this movie taught me? This movie taught me just how much I hate the post megaupload crackdown on the Internet. D: The DVD I got from the library started giving me problems halfway through. In the many other times this has happened I just downloaded another copy off the Internet and watched the damaged bits there but noooo. Now all my sources are dead. ;_;

Basically I had to watch a significant amount of this movie in short fits and bursts and it took me about double its actual run time. Thanks a lot corporate America. Thanks a lot.

All I knew about this movie going in was it's alot like E.T. I've never watched E.T but pop culture osmosis taught me to believe this would be a heart warming story of a boy helping an alien go home. That is sort of what this was if your definition of heartwarming can encompass a boy helping an alien who has literally been eating people from his town. I don't know that that's really more sweet than worrying.

Also at one point the kid finds the alien's underground lair, sees he has dozens of people trussed up for eating and grabs about three of them before running. I totally understand wanting to survive? But dang that's cold, sucks to be people who Joe Lamb doesn't care about.

On the positives: Elle Fanning kicked ass actingwise in this, I definitely have to see her in more stuff. Also Joe Lamb; cute kid. Worrying priorities but cute. 3 stars

6. The Secret World of Arrietty (February 21) - 3.5 stars

THIS WAS CHEESY AND EMOTIONALLY MANIPULATIVE AND I DON'T CARE, I LOVED IT ANYWAYS. >l I went to see it with my school Anime Club and afterwards got into a yelling match over how it was totally a good movie with one of my friends there (don't worry, this is a regular thing with us. Other things we yelled about: whether Twilight the book or Twilight the movie is superior (the movie!), the definition of whore (you have to be paid okay, just because people colloquially use it as an insult deigning promiscuity does not change its meaning), and whether a romance novel should always feature a shirtless dude on the front (I'm not objecting but if it's some random guy lacking a shirt and equipped with a sword I would definitely choose the half-cat pirate lady like why is this a question? I'm reading this for her, and I refuse to believe every romance reader in the history of ever only reads the books to self-insert and fantasize about the guy. I am not that special a snowflake)).

Anyways, since I have apparently memoried myself straight back into argument mode let me explain why the ending was totally appropriate. Sure, it would have been cool to see the new family Arrietty and her family went to live with. But this movie started with Shawn and Arrietty, their relationship was both what caused and fixed the movie's central conflict (oh my god Shawn, you don't just switch out a room in someone's house! How would you feel if a giant hand came out of the sky and replaced your kitchen without warning! TERRIFIED is the answer), and after that it would have been weird if the whole thing wasn't bookended by him. Also the 1997 Borrower movie was great but this is not a remake and should be considered on its own merits and not just in comparison to it. Thank you and good night.
