Movie Review: Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs

Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) has grown up on the sleepy island town of Swallow Falls, which used to be known for its sardine industry before it went south. Since he was a kid, he wanted to invent something that would help people, but has frequently ended in disaster. His latest invention, a device that can replicate food from water, has seemingly been another disaster that ruins the opening of Sardine Land, until the sky starts raining cheeseburgers. He finds that he still can communicate with the device, which it somewhere up in the sky. The mayor (Bruce Campbell) sees this as an opportunity to draw tourism to the island. Town policeman Earl (Mr. T) sees this as an opportunity to get closer to his son. Flint sees it as an opportunity to get close to weathergirl Sam Sparks (Anna Faris). But, will this all backfire on everyone?

We've been critical of movies in the past that have tried to make feature length films out of the rather thin plots of popular children's books. The problem is trying to expand the plot enough while still keeping what made the original story attractive. The original "Meatballs" is like that, where townspeople get their food from the daily weather. How do you build a movie around that?

Well, I think they managed it quite well actually. Having a bit of a backstory as to why it happens and surrounding him with characters experiencing the phenomena ends up being a good choice. A lot of his situation is zany and way over the top and is sometimes disturbing. Overall, it was an enjoyable romp.
