Every year the National Theater of Iceland selects a community theater production to stage at their theater. They call it "the most interesting community theater production of the year" - whatever that means.
My theater company likes to think it's pretty good but it's never been selected. One reason, we've postulated, could be proximity. So many of these production come from small towns somewhere in the country and as a prize get to show their play in city. We are already here. Another could be relevance. The Student Theater has been selected twice in the last decade with extremely socially relevant pieces. We usually just want to show people a good - if slightly silly and musically inclined - time. Or maybe our stuff hasn't been that interesting.
As you may have already guessed we just won.
Usually I'll anxiously wait for the announcement - kind of hoping but not really. But this time I didn't give it a second thought. My mind has been on other things - my kitchen, the company, school - so once the play I wrote (along with 3 others) premiered last weekend I just put it out of my mind. It all came together in the end, people were having a rousing good time, my job was done.
It's called "Rokk". Two rock bands share a rehearsal space. One band is all guys - the other all girls. Throw a shifty landlord and roadie has-been into the mix and complications arise. It's a musical but an unorthadox one since all the numbers are part of the rehearsals. They also become part of the plot. Once song required three different arrangements - and three sets of lyrics.
Originally we'd planned to show it at a theater a neighboring town had graciously offered us access to since available theater space in Reykjavík has essentially become non-existent. But a change of management and a well placed stab in the back forced us out of there with little time to spare so we figured "what the hell - we'll show a play that takes place at a rehearsal space in our rehearsal space." We'd already started converting some of it into a tentative theater so it was only a matter of finishing the job. Basically setting up a fire escape because everything else we need was already there. And that we did.
